Residents 12+ now eligible for a bivalent COVID-19 booster

Effective October 17, 2022, everyone in Ontario aged 12 and over is eligible to get a bivalent COVID-19 booster dose if they have completed their primary COVID-19 vaccine series. The bivalent boosters are an updated version of the COVID-19 vaccine. It targets the original COVID-19 virus and the Omicron variants that are currently circulating in Ontario. As we enter the respiratory illness season, residents are encouraged to stay up-to-date with all their vaccines.

Appointments can be booked through the COVID-19 vaccination portal or by calling the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre (PVCC) at 1-833-943-3900.

In addition to getting vaccinated, those over 60 years of age can also access antiviral treatments such as Paxlovid if they have COVID-19 symptoms. Learn more about COVID-19 treatments and review your eligibility by using Ontario’s antiviral screener tool, speaking with your health care provider or calling 811.

COVID-19 updates

Reminder - Updated public health guidance

Public health guidance to manage COVID-19 during the respiratory illness season this fall has been updated by the Province. Key highlights within the updated guidance include:

  • If you are in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, continue to self- monitor for symptoms. You no longer need to isolate, but you should wear a mask for 10 days when in public.

  • If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever, cough, or runny nose, stay home from school, work and social events until your fever is gone and symptoms are improving, get a rapid antigen test or, if eligible, a PCR test. Wear a mask for 10 days after and avoid non-essential visits to high-risk individuals and settings

COVID-19 border measures

The federal government recently announced that all travellers arriving in Canada no longer have to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter Canada or meet COVID-19 testing, quarantine or isolation requirements. Also, travellers will no longer have to submit their public health information through ArriveCAN. Transport Canada has also removed existing travel requirements and travellers will no longer be required to undergo health checks for travel on air and rail or wear masks on planes and trains.

Although the masking requirement is being lifted, all travellers are strongly encouraged to wear high quality and well-fitted masks during their journeys.

Peel clinics offering children aged five to11 for COVID-19 booster dose

Peel clinics are offering a pediatric COVID-19 booster dose for children aged five to 11. A booster dose restores protection that has weakened over time and provides an extra layer of protection from severe illness and hospitalization due to COVID-19. Eligible children aged five to 11 can get their first booster dose at a recommended interval of at least six months, and at a minimum of three months, following their most recent dose. Parents and caregivers of children five to 11 years old can book an appointment for a pediatric booster dose through the COVID-19 vaccination portal or by calling the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre at 1-833-943-3900, through pop-up and partner clinics, participating pharmacies, and primary care provider. Parents with questions are encouraged to reach out to their health care provider, the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre, or the SickKids COVID-19 Vaccine Consult Service to make an informed choice.

Routine school immunizations available throughout the fall

Eligible students in Grades 7-12 can choose from one of six Peel Public Health clinics to get their routine school immunizations, in addition to the school-based clinics operating throughout the region.

Routine school immunizations including the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Hepatitis B (Hep B), and Meningococcal ACYW-135 help prevent serious diseases including cervical cancer. These immunizations are safe and effective, including for those with chronic medical conditions. Students who are unsure or may have missed their series will only need to get the remaining dose or doses. A series does not need to be restarted even if the recommended time between doses has passed.

Students, and/or parents and guardians can check if their child has been immunized by checking Immunization Connect Ontario (ICON) or by asking their primary care provider.

Immunizations are available by appointment only. Walk-ins are not accepted. Appointments can be booked by calling (905) 799-7700 or by checking peelregion.ca/immunize.

Children 12 years or older do not need to wait between receiving the COVID-19 vaccine and receiving any of these vaccines. Co-administration is safe and effective.

More information is available on our website.
