"The child who concentrates is immensely happy." -Maria Montessori
Dr. Maria Montessori developed the “prepared environment,” allowing children to learn at their own speed and according to their own capacities in a non-competitive atmosphere.
The teacher prepares the environment based on deep observation of the child and directs activity that offers stimulation for the child to learn and grow. Montessori children are free to learn, it is because they have acquired an Horme (inner discipline) from their exposure of the prepared environment to develop a physical and mental order.
A Montessori toddler program, compared to traditional childcare, has many benefits.
Here are just a few examples:
A positive, accelerated potty training experience. Many children between the ages of 18-24 months show signs of readiness to learn how to use the toilet, what we in Montessori call “toilet learning.” All children enrolled at Covered Bridge learn to be diaper free.
The ability to play independently and become increasingly self-sufficient. You will often hear your toddler say at home, “I can do it myself!” Children learn to be independent via simple practical life skills.
A dramatic surge in vocabulary. We do not use "baby talk," we use real words with a real voice. By being able to better express their needs, toddlers gain increased control of their emotions, which leads to fewer tantrums and a more joyful relationship between parent and child.
We present lessons as a group and individually. We are sensitive to the child’s need for focus. Even while presenting a lesson, minimal words are spoken so that the focus is trained on the lesson. The teachers track the work each child chooses. We observe when the child is ready for the next work, or if they need more time to master the particular skill.
