THE movement to get Middle Schoolers PHYSICALLY ACTIVE to improve COGNITIVE functioning during class!
Less of THIS
AND
More of THIS
The Make Me Move initiative advocates for students, teachers, community members, and families to participate in meaningful movement increasing cognitive functioning through engaging the brain and body before, during, and after long periods of sedentary behaviors.
The following project is an example of an advocacy program any school could implement. For this assignment, it is an idea based off a community of about 20,000 people that will be called the Town of Highlander. With community assets as follows:
Primary Stakeholders: 8th Grade Students - active classrooms to improve learning, focus, and productivity
Secondary Stakeholders:
This on-going initiative will work closely with the 8th grade math, science and reading/English teachers to engage students in movement before or during class. Similarly, to the SHAPE activity calendar and the Head Start Body Start calendar (see pictures below) the students on the task force will work with the other members, but have the primary role in creating quarter long calendars for their Math, Science, Reading/English teachers. (Each calendar will have the same activities, but mixed up on different days). Students and teachers will participate in the movement challenge or activity before or during class. The corresponding classroom teacher will do the said activity at least once after 20 minutes of sedentary behavior in their class. With the mission of this project in mind, these classroom teachers will likely see improvements on their own test and class work as well as standardized state and national tests. Teachers will be responsible for keeping track of the data on how often they do the activity (in minutes) and test scores. They have the freedom to break it up how they wish during their class and as they see fit. Each quarter a local small business "gym" owner will come in and participate/lead activities in all the classes that day. With the program goals in mind, teachers will gradually work into this in the first year with hopes in sequential years to have 80%-100% daily activity before or during the 73 minute classes.
Within the first quarter of implementation, math, science, and reading/English teachers will have implemented at least 30% days with Make Me Move.
Within the second quarter of implementation, math, science, and reading/English teachers will have implemented at least 50% days with Make Me Move.
Within the third quarter of implementation, math, science, and reading/English teachers will have implemented at least 65% days with Make Me Move.
Within the fourth quarter of implementation, math, science, and reading/English teachers will have implemented at least 80% days with Make Me Move.
Within the first year of implementing, small business "gym" owners will have been in the schools at least twice and at least four new families/middle schoolers will have joined at least one of the three "gyms."
Students on the task force will be in charge each quarter to put up bulletin boards and flyers. To the left, are examples of flyers and quotes that students will create. They will be factual with information on the benefits of physical activity as well as pictures or quotes from student and staff.
T-shirts will be provided to 8th grade students and staff, as well as sponsors, that have "Make Me Move" (image to the left) on the front and on the back will be community sponsors and at the top it will say, "Ask me about THE MOVEMENT."
The website will have all the information found on this page in an family and kid friendly format that includes resources for at home, recess ideas, summer activities, winter activities, community resources, school academic data, videos of students participating in Make Me Move, and gear.
Based off of Minnesota, the scores on the MCA's will be the largest assessment tool for this on-going initiative. They will be compared based on the testing scores they had in 5th grade (as that is when Reading, Math, and Science are last taken all together before 8th grade).
Another form of data collection for the on-going initiative will be collected by the teachers to see how often they are participting in Make Me Move. Teachers are asked to collect data each day on the activity they did (based off the calendar) and the time they did it for in minutes. Although the goal is 20 minutes, teachers will track any number of minutes they were active. In addtion, the may take notes on behaviors they are seeing and/or scores they would like to report back to the Task Force.
The one-time event that will happen in the beginning of the school year, and based on first year success, it will become an annual thing. The following will be based off of the first year implementing it. Highland Community will be invited to attend a Community Picnic as the big kick off event for Make Me Move. Invites will be sent directly to the 8th grade students and their families as well as the 8th grade teachers, middle school administration, and small business "gym" owners that will be particpating in the on-going initiavie. Flyers and social media will reach out to the rest of the community as they are invited to join in the fun and festivities of what Make Me Move has to offer. This will also be the place that 8th grade students will get their T-shirts for the year. At this event, represenatives from any one of the programmatic resources (previous section) will be invited to attend. Let's Move. Active Schools. will provide a guest speaker for the event and expand on the importance of movement in the schools and for the development of the whole child. Hy-Vee and Kwik Trip will provide the food. Local musicians and the school band, orchestra, and choir will be invited to play during the event as well. As the director of the program, I will plan, and with the help of the other PE teachers, implement fun games and activities for the students. There will be yard games set up all over as well as times where other activities will happen like a three legged race, sack race, team relays, and many more.
The purpose of this community based one-time event is to get the support of the community and to advocate for the importance of movement in the classroom. It is a kick off event for the Make Me Move: Classroom initiative. With the attendance of experts in Physical Activity and Brain Functioning, it will be a worth while event to attend and reach all audiences to advocate the importance of the on-going initiative while getting active and enjoying what Highland community has to offer with all different community members.
This event will spark the engagement and excitement for the middle school students and teachers participating in Make Me Move: Classroom. It will impact program goals by stressing the importance to the whole community helping each and everyone there hold the school and teachers accountable for participating. It will also impact the "gym" owners to get more involved in hopes of reaching our last goal with them. They will be an essential resource and advocate for this program as a whole. With the help of the Task Force and the 8th grade students, this community picnic will be a spark for the community on the importance of physical activity to triumph over sedentary behaviors in schools and business in the Highland area.
Utilizing the same website as in the on-going initiative, there will be a page specifically for the community picnic with an RSVP area and a survey/review area to add to our assessment tools below. On the Flyers there will be QR codes that will lead to the community picnic page along with quick information (seen to the left) about the picnic. These flyers will be sent home in the packets students must complete before school starts as well as hung in business and on poles around the community. On the website there will be a schedule of events for the day including what time lunch is served, times of music, and times of games and activities. In future years (depending on the support), volleyball, bean bag, and/or other tournament sign-ups will be here as well.
In order to evaluate the effectiveness and the quality of the community picnic, surveys will be handed out throughout the event at the food tents and activity/game stations. While speaking to the community as a whole, they will be asked to be filled out and returned. They will also be on the website for people to fill out electronically if they so please to do it that way. The information received on these surveys will be used for future years and assess what people took away from the event and what we could educate our community more on dealing with physical education and activity.
