Post-Camp Volleyball Tips: A Deep Dive into Underhand Passing
Hey there, volleyball superstars,
This is Dr. Darren Cannell, your coach from the Canadian Elite Academy. Our camp was a rollercoaster ride of learning, fun, and improvements, and I hope you're just as excited about continuing your volleyball journey as I am. Today, I'm sharing some tips and at-home activities to help you enhance your underhand passing skills.
Underhand Passing
Underhand passing, or bumping, is one of the critical elements of volleyball. It sets up attacks, controls the opponent's serve, and keeps the ball in play.
The Position
A proper passing position involves your feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, and body leaning forward. Your arms should be straight, and your hands should be firmly clasped to form a uniform platform.
Home Drill: Mirror Check
Practicing in front of a mirror can help you visually correct your stance and improve muscle memory. Stand in front of a full-length mirror and get into your passing position. Check if your form matches the description above.
The Contact
Making clean contact with the ball is crucial in passing. You want to aim for the part of your arm where it's the flattest - typically, the area from your wrist to your elbow.
Home Drill: Wall Pass
Stand a few feet from a wall and pass the ball against it. Start with a low-power pass, gradually increasing the power as you get more comfortable. Aim for consistent, flat contact on your arms.
The Direction
Directing the ball accurately to your setter is another essential part of passing. This requires you to angle your platform towards your target and use your legs to generate power.
Home Drill: Target Practice
Set a target (like a cone or a marked area) a few feet away. Practice passing the ball toward this target. It may seem not easy initially, but your accuracy will improve with time.
The Movement
Often, the ball won't come straight to you. That's where footwork comes into play. You need to move quickly and efficiently to get into position to pass the ball.
Home Drill: Shadow Shuffle
Practice your shuffle step (sideways quick steps) or defensive slide (moving without crossing your feet) in your living room or backyard. You can even set up markers and move between them to simulate real gameplay.
Remember, the key to mastering underhand passing, like any other skill in volleyball, is consistent practice. Incorporate these drills into your daily routine, and you'll notice the difference when you're back on the court.
Stay safe, practice, and stretch before and after each session. Let's ace the new season together!
Cheers,
Dr. Darren Cannell
