Having students back in our school building is so exciting for everyone--teachers, students, and parents! However, for some students (and parents), after spending a relaxing summer at home, coming back to school can be stressful and difficult! There are some ways that you can help your child adjust early in the school year:
Morning/Drop off Routine: Consistency is key! Consistency provides security for everyone. We all find it difficult to adjust to constantly changing situations. Ensuring that your morning routine is predictable will help your child relax in the morning before school.
Arrive Early: Student drop off begins at 7:10 and the tardy bell rings at 7:50. Dropping your child off may help prevent the feeling of being rushed or stressed to get to breakfast and class.
Stay Confident and Positive: Sometimes, the first day of school can be just as hard for parents as it is for students! Remember that your child can pick up on your emotions, so do your best to remember to be confident and positive!
Promote Independence and Positivity: Remind your child that, at NDE, they are our number one priority and we are there for them. "You've Got This!"
Drop off ritual: Some families find it helpful to have a drop off ritual. This may be a hug, fist bump, phrase, or hand signal for getting out of the car in the car rider line.
Keep Goodbyes Brief: Sometimes it may feel tempting to sneak away, but it also may make your child feel more nervous. Keep goodbyes brief and reassuring and leave promptly.
Prepare your Child: Talking or reading books about school with your child and what a wonderful experience it will be can help prepare them for school and saying goodbye.
Validate Feelings: Remind your child that feeling nervous is normal and reassure them that it will be a great day and that you will see them at the end of the school day.
Be on time for pick up/bus drop off: Knowing that you will be there when school is out at the end of the day will help your child decrease worry and anxious feelings.
Bring a piece of home to school: Your child may benefit from bringing a small comfort item such as a family photo to help them feel connected to home while at school.
You've got this!
