Meet Mayor Sloan J. Griffin III

Hello Blythewood,

My name is Sloan J. Griffin III, and I am honored to serve as your Mayor. My wife, Tennille, our son, Tristian, and our beloved Pomeranian, Mr. Rosco, are proud to call Blythewood home. We truly love living, working, and playing in this remarkable community.

My connection to Blythewood began years ago during my deployment with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist with the 2015 historic floods. During that time, I spent many meals at local favorites like Lizard's Thicket, Carolina Wings, and Scottie’s Café—experiences that helped shape the warm appreciation I developed for this community. Today, I am blessed to be a resident, a husband, a father, and now, your Mayor.

My professional journey began in June 2005 as a firefighter, and it has been a privilege to dedicate my career to public safety and emergency management. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Fire and Emergency Management (Magna Cum Laude) from Kaplan University. I also proudly serve our nation as a Reservist with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), supporting emergency operations nationwide. In 2024, I assisted in leading operations for all federal disaster declarations, helping coordinate life-saving response and recovery efforts across multiple impacted regions.

In 2016, I was deeply honored to receive the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s highest operations award for “Excellence in Leadership and Service.” Governor Nikki Haley presented this recognition during a luncheon at the Governor’s Mansion for my efforts in developing an emergency management system that integrated federal agencies and state-recognized Native American tribal nations.

Throughout my career, I have served in many capacities, including Firefighter, Fire Marshal, Fire Captain, Operations Chief, Public Safety Officer, and various emergency management leadership roles. With FEMA, I have responded to thousands of emergency calls, trained hundreds of individuals, and deployed more than a dozen times both within South Carolina and across the nation. Most notably, I served as Planning Section Chief during Hurricane Harvey, leading strategic operational planning for the City of Houston during one of the most devastating disasters in modern U.S. history.

Now, as your Mayor, I am committed to building a better and brighter Blythewood—a community that listens, grows, and thrives. Together, we can ensure a safe, vibrant, and environmentally responsible town that celebrates its history, elevates arts and culture, embraces smart growth, and fosters opportunity for all. I am dedicated to delivering real results and shaping a future that reflects the needs, values, and dreams of every Blythewood resident.

Thank you for entrusting me with the privilege of serving this incredible town. Let’s continue working together to make Blythewood the very best it can be.

Warm regards,
Sloan J. Griffin III
Mayor, Town of Blythewood, SC
