A Council Tax Band is a category assigned to every residential property in the UK. It’s based on the property’s estimated value as of April 1991 (for England and Scotland) and April 2003 (for Wales).
Properties are grouped into bands from A to H in England and Scotland, and A to I in Wales. The higher your band, the more Council Tax you pay each year. This money goes to your local council and helps fund local services like rubbish collection, street lighting, libraries, and schools.
In England, the bands are based on the following 1991 property values:
Band
Property Value (as of April 1991)
A
Up to £40,000
B
£40,001 – £52,000
C
£52,001 – £68,000
D
£68,001 – £88,000
E
£88,001 – £120,000
F
£120,001 – £160,000
G
£160,001 – £320,000
H
Over £320,000
