Help Digitize the Cottage Grove Sentinel!

Welcome to the Sentinel Digitization Project!

The Cottage Grove Museum is a proud member of the Partners in History, a consortium of nearly a dozen history organizations all working to preserve the history and tell the story of Cottage Grove.  And as every researcher and historian knows, newspapers are central to telling that story.

That's why the Partners in History have joined the University of Oregon's Oregon Digital Newspaper Program to digitize the entire collection of Cottage Grove's newspapers.

This decade-long project has steadily converted Cottage Grove newspapers from microfilm to searchable digital images that are available free to anyone with a computer and internet access.

We've already digitized the very first newspapers published in Cottage Grove and all the way newspapers published in the early 1950s  and they are all available online here.

The project is working its way up through the beginning of the 1970s, but after that the funding will run out.  That's where you come in.  This is an opportunity to help with the next phase of the digitization project: the 1970s!

We've made it easy for you to help.  We've broken it down so you can donate to as little as one page!

Here's how:

Digitize one page for 75 cents

One edition of the Sentinel for $20.00

One half a microfilm reel (approx. 20 editions) for $400

A whole reel (approx 40 editions) for $825

And the rest of 1970s for $7,425

We encourage you to take a look at these newspapers for yourself.  Learn what life was like for the first residents of Cottage Grove.  You'll see the entire newspaper including the advertisements.  Not only is this a valuable tool for researchers, it's interesting, educational and fun to see how different life was here in Cottage Grove 130 years ago and it doesn't cost a dime!
