Costxy ("the app") is a free expense-splitting app for Android, developed and operated by AJ Smith ("we", "us", or "our"). This privacy policy explains what information the app handles and why.
Summary: Costxy stores your data only on your device. It does not collect, transmit, or share your data with anyone.
Costxy itself does not collect, transmit, or store any personal information on external servers. All the data you enter into the app — including groups, members, expenses, settlements, notes, and dates — is stored locally on your device and remains there.
The app does not:
- Require an account or sign-in
- Use analytics or tracking services
- Show advertisements
- Send crash reports
- Sell, rent, or share any personal information
- Know your name, email address, phone number, or any other identifying information
However, platform providers such as the Google Play Store may collect limited technical information (such as installation or device data) as part of app distribution. This is outside our control and applies to all apps installed through those platforms.
When you use Costxy, the following information is stored in a local SQLite database on your device:
- Group names and the currency selected for each group
- Member names you add to groups
- Expense titles, amounts, dates, and how each expense is split
- Settlement records and any notes you attach
- App settings (such as your chosen theme)
None of this data leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to export it.
Costxy includes a feature that allows you to export your data to a .json file.
- The export file is created on your device.
- If you choose to share it (for example via email, cloud storage, or messaging apps), it is sent only to the destination you select using your device's native share features.
- Costxy does not upload or transmit this data itself.
When importing:
- The app reads a .json file from your device using the system file picker.
- Costxy does not download data from the internet during this process.
Once exported, any file you share is outside the app's control and is subject to the privacy and security practices of the service or app you use to store or send it.
Costxy uses the following Android permission:
- Files and media access — used only when you choose to export or import data. The app can read or write files solely when you explicitly select them via the system file picker or share sheet. Costxy does not access files in the background.
Costxy does not use any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services.
If you install Costxy from the Google Play Store, Google may collect information about the installation and your device according to its own privacy policies. This is outside our control.
Costxy is not intended for children under the age of 13. The app does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone, including children. Because all data is stored locally on the device, there is no server-based data to access, request, or delete.
Because all data is stored locally on your device:
- You can delete individual groups, expenses, or settlements using the controls within the app.
- You can remove all data by uninstalling the app, which deletes the app's local database from your device.
If you have exported a .json file, that file remains wherever you saved or shared it and is outside Costxy's control. You are responsible for managing or deleting any exported copies.
Legal basis
Costxy does not process personal data on external servers. Any data you enter into the app is stored locally on your device and remains under your control. As a result, data protection laws such as the UK GDPR apply in a limited way, since no personal data is collected or processed by us.
If this privacy policy changes, the updated version will be published at the same location, and the effective date at the top will be updated. Material changes may also be mentioned in the app's release notes on the Google Play Store.
