"The purpose of life is to contribute in some way to making things better ". - Robert F. Kennedy
Who is Dr. Edson Costa-Filho?
Dr. Edson Costa-Filho is originally from Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. Growing up in a low-income family in the 7th most populated Brazilian city, Dr. Costa-Filho saw how poor water management can negatively impact local communities' human dignity and collective social progress. Thus, he made a decision, at an early age in life, to devote his professional career to improving water resources management.
He has more than ten years of experience in scientific research regarding water resources in Civil and Environmental Engineering, focusing on ecohydrology, environmental biophysics, and remote sensing. He graduated with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering at Universidade de Pernambuco, Brazil, in 2017. After being a visiting undergraduate student at Colorado State University (CSU) from 2014 to 2015, Dr. Costa-Filho returned to CSU to pursue his career as a scientist and university professor.
He obtained an M.Sc. in Civil Engineering at CSU focusing on environmental biophysics and remote sensing applied to evapotranspiration modeling. Dr. Costa-Filho is part of the peer-reviewer team of the Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering (American Society of Civil Engineers), Irrigation Science Journal (Springer Nature Group), Irrigation and Drainage (Wiley), and Agricultural Water Management (Elsevier).
Dr. Costa-Filho obtained his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at CSU with a research project that focused on the development of a remote sensing data fusion algorithm based on spectral unmixing and machine-learning approaches to improve water resource management in agricultural fields. He has more than six years of experience using high-resolution remote sensing imagery data from a wide range of platforms (e.g., airborne, spaceborne, and proximal) to model environmental fluxes to support sustainable water and soil resources.
Dr. Costa-Filho has a extensive training and successful track record in scientific writing, engineering teaching, grant proposals, public speaking, and leadership training. He enjoys riding his bike and playing soccer, exercising at gym five times a week, and cooking gourmet food when he is not working towards promoting water sustainability in small and large scale settings.
