Biophysics

OVERVIEW

Although Biophysics was not my favorite, I can safely say it was the class I learned the most from. Biophysics helped teach me the basics of python, and melded everything from physics to biology into the programming we were doing in class. Kevin was a great TA to have in class because he was incredibly patient and kind. Overall, I am happy I got to learn Python in such a short period of time, and am grateful to be introduced to so many different sciences considering my school does not offer physics or have a good chemistry department.

Random Walks

What is a Random Walk?

A random walk is the process that takes place in bacterial cells that allows the cells to perform daily functions. Since bacterial, Prokaryotic, cells are not as complex as Eukaryotic cells, they rely on random collisions of certain molecules in order to perform life inducing functions. We discussed that these cells perform these walks completely randomly, meaning they have no incentive to go one way or the other. This can lead to walks taking a very small amount of steps like 20, all the way up to 30,000 steps in order to reach their target destination. What's most interesting is the fact that these walks happen in seconds and are happening all the time around us.Â
