Aesthetics Criteria

A portion of your team's Performance Index will include aesthetics judging by CREE and Hala Industries representatives.

The main criteria your Wind Turbine Tower will be judged on is:

  • Creativity

  • Workmanship

  • Overall aesthetic appeal

Each category will be weighted based off importance to the Judging Committee.

Judging Committee Criteria

The Judging Committee understands that the design engineers and architects for the bidding companies have requested information regarding what the committee is looking for in aesthetics of the Wind Turbine Tower.

Below are some comments from the Judging Committee Members to help the companies design a high scoring Wind Turbine Tower for aesthetics. Remember the scores will be averaged among all (8) committee members so each person may have different values. Feel free to talk to your Cluster Assistants, Teacher Fellow, and Engineering Instructors to learn more about their aesthetic preferences!

"I love uniqueness, so creative designs rank high for me."

"For creativity, I usually gravitate towards designs that use unique engineering concepts as opposed to just funky looking ones."

"Any themes, coloring, or other fun elements is a plus for aesthetic appeal."

"I would rank workmanship first: clean cuts and connections, no excess glue, pieces are aligned/leveled, etc. better workmanship = better performance."

"I'm definitely considering overall shape - Square floors/frames + braces all the way up is ordinary, so if they can get creative with shapes while maintaining good structural performance, that's a bonus from me."

"I would rank workmanship highest because the way you construct something impacts its performance and ultimately we want things to perform well."

"I generally I like bigger projects - the bigger it is, the more fun!"

"Clean connections are definitely a must. A structure can be beautiful but if it fails too quickly because of poor connections then that's not good."

"Originality is a part of creativity for me. If your design looks like the given baseline elements, or structures in the photos posted on the website, or common windmills that we see everywhere, then the creativity score will be lower."
