4MOST will be a wide-field, high-multiplex, fibre-fed, optical spectroscopic survey facility to be mounted on ESO's 4-m-class telescope VISTA and operated in ESO's Paranal Observatory operational environment. The facility will be able to simultaneously obtain spectra of ~2400 objects distributed over an hexagonal field-of-view of 4.2 square degrees.
This exceptional instrument enables many science goals, but the design is especially intended to complement three key all-sky, space-based observatories of prime European interest: Gaia, Euclid, and eROSITA.
The large galaxy redshift surveys planned with 4MOST will also provide unique constraints on galaxy evolution and cosmology. Linking the low and intermediate redshift Universe, 4MOST will trace the assembly of stellar mass and dark matter halos, and witness the emergence of structures such as groups, filaments and voids over recent times. On the largest scales, clustering measurements of a variety of tracers of large-scale structure will provide high-fidelity constraints on cosmological parameters.
