What is Cosmic Coat?
Cosmic coat is a flexible, non-toxic, biodegradable coating engineered to protect pharmaceutical compounds and radiation-sensitive equipment from cosmic radiation during space missions. Designed specifically for coat cargo containers sent to space, it is formulated using Malaysia-sourced natural rubber combined with tungsten carbide for enhanced radiation shielding. This innovative composite material was jointly developed with Monash University Malaysia’s Colloids and Polymers Group, Japan’s IDDK Co. Ltd., UniKL MICET, and the Nuclear Malaysia Agency. The composite has been integrated into a medication box and was sent for microgravity testing on SpaceX's Bandwagon-1 mission on ATMOS spacecraft in April 2025. This milestone represents a significant achievement for Malaysian science and a major advancement for space applications.
