Corylus Services is owned and managed by Colin Wilkinson, a science communicator with 20 years' experience of developing, managing and delivering science communication and education activities for audiences from WI groups to nursery age children across the country. Colin is formerly the Director of SETPOINT North East, a Government-accredited centre of excellence in the delivery of STEM activities to schools. This started from small beginnings as Cleveland SATRO, and Colin multiplied its turnover by 20 in eight year, taking it from one member of staff to 10, and from serving 10,000 students to over 50,000 each year.
Colin now takes a secial interest in the Big Bang UK Young Scientist and Engineer of the Year Competition, acting as its chair of judges and advising on all judging matters. Colin also chairs the UK Scientific Review Committee for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) - the group which selects the nominees from the UK to Intel ISEF.
Colin began his career in steelmaking as a sponsored student at what was then British Steel’s Teesside Works, Colin holds a chemistry degree from Warwick and a Master’s in Communicating Science delivered by Techniquest, the UK’s leading science discovery centre in Cardiff Bay, accredited by the University of Glamorgan (now the University of South Wales).
In 2009, Colin developed a form of arthritis which continues to limit his ability to work and live life to the full. This has led Colin to develop an interest in health services, research into musculoskeletal conditions and helping to improve the NHS, and in particular services for people who live with pain. Colin is currently a member of NICE's Guideline Development Group on Chronic Pain, Versus Arthritis' Pain Advisory Group, and Vice-chair of Versus Arthritis' Patient Insight Network. Colin has also been involved in advising clinical trials on how to engage patients and the public.
