Contest: This contest is based on the skills of consumer observation, comparison, and the ability to make a fact-based purchase. Each participant is expected to defend their purchases to a panel of judges. This contest is held at the county and district level and at 4-H Roundup. Livestock shows such as the San Antonio Livestock Exposition and San Angelo Stock Show also offer a consumer decision making contest.

Contest: At the Food Challenge, teams of 3-4 students receive a list of ingredients and have 40 minutes to create a dish. The teams then present their dish to judges are scored on preparation, serving size, food safety concerns, nutritional value and cost. Students qualify at the county and district level to compete at the state contest. Review all the rules in the Food Challenge Manual.

Contest: A “Quiz Bowl” is a quiz game that tests teams of 4 on their knowledge of basic nutrition, consumer information, food and kitchen safety, food preparation skills and storage, health and fashion and interior design skills. Up against the clock, the 4-H’ers buzz in to answer a question and earn points for correct answers. Teams advance in a tournament-system bracket to win the competition.

Contest: In horse judging, you will compete on a team as you learn to be the judge of a horse show! You will learn all the body parts of a horse, the ideal characteristics of how a horse moves, and determine how to score horses in competition. You will also explain how you decided on your scores. You will learn decision-making and public speaking skills. When you get to the senior level of this activity, you could compete in national competitions. Contest: Livestock Judging is a great way to learn decision making and public speaking and is at most major stock shows. Judging guidelines and information can be found on the Texas 4-H Livestock Judging project page. Contest: You will learn to identify all of the 74 native and introduced grasses which are listed on the Master Plant List for 4-H. The grasses in the grass contest are important for their value in making decisions about the Texas forage resources, their health, and help to determine the change that has occurred on our land base in Texas. You will learn how plants grow, grazing impacts on land, grass and plant identification and examination. Visit the State Roundup webpage to learn more.

Contest: The Texas 4-H Photography Judging contest allows 4-H members to demonstrate skills in the evaluation, selection, and placing of photographs based on industry standards and expectations. The 4-H members participating in the contest will judge six classes of photographs and two classes of problems, testing both the participant’s knowledge and skills in the photography project. Participants will then explain their placings, practicing their public speaking skills through oral reasons.
