This musical expression has its roots in the Mexican revolution and it was used to communicate epic oral stories from one town to another. The lyrics are based on heroic acts from specific people. They mention their physical aspects, they talk about their personality and the place of origin within the northern region of Mexico.
The narrative is told through a first or third person as a form of witness of historical or everyday events.
This genre was originally a mestizo way of storytelling. They began as stories of the underdogs.
Today the most common arc of the corridos is commonly from rags to riches and focused in the drug cartels.
