Why Do People Procrastinate?

By Erika N.

What goes on in the mind of a procrastinator, and why do they wait to do things last minute? There are many reasons why different people procrastinate, and most of the time it’s not their fault. In most cases, procrastinators are smart people and hard workers. So what makes them behave like this?

According to bustle.com, the reason you procrastinate might be because of the structure of your brain. In a study from Ruhr University Bochum, having a larger amygdala (a part of the brain in the temporal lobe) can lead to being more anxious. This means these people are more likely to procrastinate.

Doesn’t that mean you’re stuck with your procrastination habit? Actually, no. Your brain is very responsive and can change this habit with enough help. Developing good habits to counteract your procrastination can lead to the end of it. Good habits to develop include breaking your work into bits and rewarding yourself after certain “checkpoints”. So don’t let your brain’s bad habit keep you away from work!
