A worse case scenario with a coronal mass ejection having a direct hit on the United States or any other country could theoretically result in the breakdown of all or most of the power grid lasting for months or even years, causing the failure of our electricity based infrastructure, mass panic, then chaos, and the deaths of many millions of people. There may also be temporary or permanent damage to our electronic devices, but that would be a secondary concern because we wouldn't have any electricity to run our electronics anyway. We also wouldn't have electricity to run our gas station and municipal water pumps. Damage would be in the trillions of dollars. It's not a question of "if" a direct hit is going to happen, it's a question of "when" it's going to happen. All modern earth societies need to prepare for this evenuality. There are many things that can be done to help improve the survivablity of our modern electricity-based societies. The purpose of this site is to help educate everyone about CMEs and to incentivize all nations to prepare themselves for the inevitable "big one".
What you can do: Write, email or phone your national political representatives and request that they put the maximum possible amount of money and resources into planetary defense against coronal mass ejections and near earth objects .
