Dual Language Immersion
Coronado's Mandarin DLI Program
At Coronado, our Dual Language Immersion program follows the 50/50 model. This means that each day students will spend 50% of their day learning with a highly qualified English teacher and the other 50% learning with our highly qualified Mandarin teacher. Students learn content in both languages such as math, social studies, and science. Our students also participate in our specials offerings of art, P.E., music, and library.
We have two DLI sections per grade level with a maximum of 25 students per section.
A Quote from Principal Jeff Armstrong:
“ Learning a language early is a skill that will open the doors for students they do not even realize exist. Students who begin to learn a second language at an early age, will receive the benefits of increased academic achievement, will become bilingual and biliterate, as well as develop cross/socio-culture competence of the language they are learning. According to ACTFL, 9 of 10 employers will rely on employees with language skills other than English and 56% state language demand will increase over the next five years. The experience students receive through learning a second language will make them more marketable as they advance into today’s workforce. We are proud to offer this opportunity to our students at such an early stage in their lives!”
Program Standards & Curriculum:
Coronado's Mandarin Teachers teach AZ World Language Standards using the ACTFL and AZ State Content Standards with our curriculum. As well as the new Arizona State Standards for College and Career Readiness and State and District assessments the standard classes use as well as the ACTFL standards in the program for the Mandarin component. McGraw Hill is the math curriculum and HMH is the ela curriculum used at Coronado.
