Dear parents/carers,
Another busy term concludes, and we all look forward to spending a restful festive break with friends and families. Although not quite the eight-week behemoth of term 1, term 2 has been busy with open evenings, trips, visits and for year 11s and 13s, the first round of their PPEs. A huge thank you to the Examinations Officer, Mrs Wooding and her team, for facilitating the PPEs with the utmost efficiency.
The Sixth Form enjoyed an incredibly busy open evening, with several new courses being launched for the forthcoming year, and an exciting new partnership with Kent Panthers Basketball Club to sit alongside our established Maidstone United academy option for post 16 learners.
Following my piece, you will go on to read about the fantastic experiences that students and staff have had both inside and outside of the classroom. One I must add, is the ‘Cornwallis Carols by Candlelight’ service on the 16th of December. Many years ago, when I was the Director of Sixth Form, we would take sixth form students down for a morning carol service, and for several years endeavoured to broaden this to all students, staff, parents/carers and the local community. The pandemic, and more latterly snow, thwarted our best laid plans, but I’m delighted to say this year saw our inaugural event. A huge thank you to Mrs Herlihy for organising; our students for their readings; Mrs Watts for organising musicians and singers and St Peter’s church for hosting us.
A thank you to everyone for your continued support of myself and the school over the past two terms. I wish you all a wonderful festive break, and look forward to welcoming you back in 2025.
Mr Sutton
Head of School

On Monday 16th December, music students performed as an ensemble, supported by Andrew Parry, to provide music for the Christmas Carol Concert. The evening was very festive and the students were incredible.
Well done and thank you to Elijah, Jason, Frank & Noah.
Over the course of 9 weeks, students gathered for rehearsals every Monday and Tuesday to prepare for this year's musical production. The cast included students from Year 7 to Year 13, fostering many new friendships along the way. A massive congratulations to everyone involved in the cast and stage crew of Frozen Jr! We are incredibly proud of all your hard work. The three performances were absolutely AMAZING!
On the evening of 20th of November we were delighted to welcome in to school a record number of families visiting for our Sixth Form open event. It was a great opportunity for us to showcase our diverse curriculum offer including the new Food Science and Nutrition course, Language for Business course, the re-introduction of a Finance course and the exciting launch of our partnership with Kent Panthers Basketball Academy!
Prospective sixth form students and families were also able to enjoy a small sample of delicious treats from Café Wallis, talk to our staff and meet our pastoral team. Applications for our sixth form can be made through Kent Choices – please do have a look at our offer of over 30 courses.
On Wednesday 4th December, 12 year 7 students went to St. Luke’s Church Maidstone to take part in a Christingle Service. They made Christingles and explored and discussed the symbolism of these.
After standing and passing the lit flame from candle to candle, students sang carols and talked about the significance of Christmas to Christians. The students had a wonderful time making the Christingles and enjoyed the beautiful church building of St. Luke’s.
This was a fantastic way to start feeling the Christmas mood and the students were an absolute credit to Cornwallis. We are grateful to St. Luke’s for hosting us and being so welcoming.
Student leaders representing all six of Cornwallis Academy’s houses visited Maidstone Homeless Care on Tuesday 3rd December in order to drop off our clothing donation that was made in September.
In total 173kg of clothes were donated and will now be made accessible to those whom need it within the community. The community’s generosity was staggering and required a large chunk of the minibus and multiple journeys from our student representatives to successfully transport to the charity in Knightrider Street.
Our student representatives also got a tour of the charity, allowing them to explore the day-centre that provides washing facilities and support in acquiring housing, as well as cooked meals. This builds upon the work that Cornwallis Academy has done over the last few years to further enhance links within the community and is really appreciated by the most vulnerable in society.
Thanks again for your support.
Our school community came together to support Children in Need with a fantastic non-uniform day and a variety of fun stalls and activities. The event was a huge success, raising almost £800!
Our newly appointed student leaders played a key role in the day’s success, taking on the challenge of organising and running many of the stalls and games. Their creativity, teamwork, and leadership were truly put to the test, and they rose to the occasion brilliantly, ensuring everyone had a fun and memorable day.
A massive thank you to all the students, staff, and families who participated and supported this worthwhile cause. Your generosity and enthusiasm have made a real difference!
Our Year 10 and 11 Dance students recently had the fantastic opportunity to visit Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London to see Matthew Bourne’s iconic production of Swan Lake.
This critically acclaimed reimagining of the classic ballet captivated both students and staff with its stunning choreography, innovative storytelling, and powerful performances. Known for its unique twist on the traditional tale, Swan Lake offered our students an inspiring and thought-provoking experience that will no doubt enrich their understanding of professional dance.
The students were enthralled throughout the performance and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to witness such an extraordinary production live.
GCSE History students went on a residential to Berlin in October to explore the history they had been learning in lessons – Weimar and Nazi Germany between 1918 and 1939. Students were able to visit key sites such as the Reichstag parliament building, various Holocaust memorials across the city, the 1936 Berlin Olympic Stadium and Sachsenhausen Memorial Concentration Camp. The tour also provided an insight into their future GCSE topic: the Cold War, where students were able to walk the path of the Berlin Wall, see how it divided Berlin and explore the hidden espionage of Soviet Berlin in the Spy Museum.
In November, four Year 12 History students embarked on a special visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau as part of the Holocaust Educational Trust’s annual project.
This project also consisted of webinars to learn about the context of the Holocaust and hear survivor testimony. Students will be sharing their experience during Holocaust Memorial Day assemblies in January 2025 and in KS3 history lessons next term.
Our year 9s have been busy thinking about their option choices and careers. They enjoyed a very informative talk by Steve Eadon on the role of languages in the world of sport. Steve highlighted the multitude of jobs and opportunities available through the knowledge of languages.
On Friday 15th November members of the Science department celebrated World Science day. World Science Day is a UNESCO initiative established in 2001 to connect science with society. It provides an opportunity to:
Celebrate scientific achievements that have shaped our world.
Raise awareness of how science contributes to solving global challenges like climate change, health crises, and technological advancements.
Encourage young minds to explore and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
This year’s theme is “Science for a Sustainable Future”, focusing on how scientific discoveries can address environmental challenges, improve health, and foster equity worldwide.
The Cornwallis Academy science teachers used the day to dress up as a scientist and discuss the many advances science has provided us with. The students were taught by Madam Marie Curie, Edward Jenner, Albert Einstein and fictional scientist Rick Sanchez.
On Thursday the 14th November the Year 10 Drama GCSE students visited the Congress Theatre, Eastbourne to watch the National Theatre's touring production of Stephen Daldry's, An Inspector Calls.
What a fantastic evening had by all, with this being a first time experience of watching a professional show, for some. Students presented themselves in an exceptionally respectful manner, adhering to theatre etiquette and being a real asset to the school.
Students completed research booklets during the visit, which they will use to aid them in the completion of their upcoming coursework.
On Friday 22nd November we took a group of year 13 EPQ Students to the University of Kent to use their library to support the research for their chosen projects. The day started with an induction to the library, students were shown how to search for resources from the vast four floors and over one million books. They then had time to research before a quick lunch in the Rutherford Hall followed by a tour of the university.
Our 6th Form Spanish students had a fantastic day at the British Film Institute in London.
They learned about the themes in Pedro Almodovar's films and they had a screening of "Volver" which is the film they are studying for the A Level course.
Our Sixth Form A Level Art Students visited UCA Canterbury for the day. Whilst there, one of UCA’s MA students provided us with a tour of the university workshops and facilities. This gave our students the opportunity to see current degree work being made and exhibited in the university’s galleries.
The students were shown the vast array of careers available in the Creative Arts and how successful graduates of UCA have been in achieving prestigious Art and Design jobs in the UK and internationally.
Our students took advantage of the professional photography studio to create their own photoshoot.
Life drawing
As our students experienced a day in the life of an Art student at UCA Canterbury, this also involved a life drawing class with one of their lecturers, where they improved their skills of drawing people and adapting their techniques of figure drawing. This helped our students to understand the level of work that is required on a degree course. Being able to achieve this level of study gave them the confidence to aspire to attend higher education in the Arts and progress confidently in their A Level Art course.
Dear Parents/Carers,
It is with great pleasure that Miss Edwards, our Year 7 Tutors and I share a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year with you all. I have been really impressed in my first term as Head of Year 7 on just how wonderful our students are. I have seen a vast range of excellent qualities from them this term, ranging from kindness to resilience. Both Miss Edwards and I have had the pleasure of visiting them in their tutor groups and lessons and we are consistently impressed by their focus, engagement and strong work ethic.
Year 7 Football Scholarship Team
Our Year 7 Football Scholarship team have completed their league and cup fixtures and have shown excellent progress considering it is the first time they have started playing together as a team. Despite a very tough start in the Kent and English Schools Cup against 2 local Grammar Schools, they have never given up and have come 2nd in their league after not losing any games. We will find out who we have in the next round of league games in January. All the players have excelled and developed in their 4 games so far. Some special mentions go to our Captain, Olly W, who has shown his natural leadership ability, Archie M with our first goal of the season and Sonny Y, who despite missing a penalty in one of the games, stepped up in our last game and scored on his 2nd attempt.
Christmas Crafting
Our Year 7 students had a lot of fun with the Christmas Crafting trip, which was organised by the Art and RE departments at the start of December. Approximately 15 students had the fantastic opportunity to make Christmas cards, Christmas wreaths and other Christmas crafts. The students had a great time making their items, watching The Grinch and eating candy canes. Miss H Vass was especially impressed with Connor B, Anya T, Emma M, Hope H and Ricky D.
Frozen
I had the opportunity to watch my 1st School show at Cornwallis Academy this term and I was blown away by the talent of all our students. The bravery shown in standing up in front of a room full of strangers and then acting and singing was incredible. The performance was so good, it was impossible to not quietly sing along to the songs myself. The show was made even more special due to some of our Year 7 students being involved. Well done to Amelia L, Scarlett L, Amelia T and Lucas B and a special recognition goes to Cadence Ws, who performed as ‘Middle Anna’ and sang alone on stage – what a beautiful voice.
Thanks and Rewards
Over the last few weeks, our Year 7 students have been secretly writing Christmas cards for their tutors to express their ‘Thanks’ for all the hard work and support they have given over the last 2 terms. I had the pleasure of having a sneak peak at some of the messages and was truly overwhelmed at some of the kind words and messages.
We have also had our own Year 7 Advent calendar this month. Each morning, during line-up, tutors have been nominating 2 students per form to receive a mini chocolate bar and a packet of sweets as a reward for their hard work, good behaviour and all-round effort.
And finally, Miss Edwards and I have spent December visiting lessons and asking teachers to nominate 2 students per visit for their excellent classwork. These students have received a raffle ticket in preparation for our Christmas Rewards assembly. Overall, we have given out over 100 tickets – well done to everyone who received one and congratulations to the prize winners.

Dear Year 8 families,
I cannot believe it is the time of year when I am wishing you all a happy Christmas again. Time has passed so quickly since we started year 8 and what an amazing year we have had so far. Year 8 students have been motivated and working hard in their lessons, showing me they want to achieve and progress in their learning.
Throughout term two students have been involved in many sporting fixtures; lots of our students have attended after school clubs run by staff and are spending extra time at school to deepen their learning experience. We had a number of students participate in our annual show, and this year the Performing Arts Department produced an outstanding Frozen performance. This was beneficial for all who took part, they were able to work with students from all year groups and spent hours of their time rehearsing and preparing for the final shows. Congratulations to all of those who were in the play.
This year we have also relaunched our House system within the school, there have been a number of house activities throughout term two, Including another successful house afternoon. Children work with other students from all years and seem to be thoroughly enjoying the fun packed afternoons. Some students in the year have been successful in representing their house in the student leadership team.
I would like to publicly thank Mrs Lawson and Mrs Ashby for organising the year 8 pantomime trip. They both worked tirelessly counting numbers, getting permission slips, communicating with the theatre, organising coaches and arranging an outstanding opportunity for your children. I wanted to treat year 8 and run this visit to thank them for their hard work and for how proud I am about how they conduct themselves around school. We enjoyed Aladdin and all felt very Christmassy after the performance.
I am currently writing the assembly for the last day of term where we will be celebrating and giving out rewards for students that have consistently shown the Cornwallis SMILE attributes and for some with 100% attendance. This is such a lovely time where I can praise the students who are continually making me proud. Well done to everyone below who will receive an award and thank you to those who are respectful and kind and work so hard in lessons. It doesn’t go unnoticed.

Mrs Judd, Student Support Manager
Seasons greetings to our Year 10 families,
This term, our Year 10 students have continued to excel within their GCSE studies, taking on new challenges, facing them with maturity and commitment. At every step they are demonstrating the Cornwallis SMILE, doing us proud on a regular basis. Students have partaken in a number of trips, seeing them visit London and Eastbourne to name a few locations, where they enjoyed new educational experiences.
Along with their didactic studies, students have continued exploring a number of PSHE topics alongside financial literacy. At this stage of their education, we have felt it extremely important for students to gain a deeper insight into the workings of the world around them, focusing on banking and savings account as well as keeping their money safe online. This is a project they will continue to explore throughout the rest of the academic year.
Term 2 has also seen students take part in a number of extra-curricular projects, including the Year 10 Football Scholarship and the School’s Musical production of Frozen Jr. I am delighted to announce that the two lead roles were commendably taken on by two of our Year 10 students, doing themselves, the year group and the whole Year 10 community extremely proud.

The students' conduct throughout the mock examinations was excellent. I was very impressed by their hard work, dedication and promptness throughout the fortnight. This bodes very well for next summer, when they will undertake their final GCSEs.
Many of the students are already exploring options at post 16. If you have any queries regarding undertaking A Levels at Cornwallis Academy, please contact jwoollett@cornwallisacademy who is Head of Sixth Form and who will answer any questions you have.
Can I please also remind all parents that Year 11s should be dressed in the appropriate school uniform when they return to school.
On behalf of the Year 11 team, I'd like to wish all our students and their families a happy and relaxing Christmas. We look forward to welcoming them back into school on January 6th, at the start of their GCSE year.
If you need to contact the year team, please email jspurling@cornwallisacademy.com or sperry@cornwallisacademy.com
From Mr Spurling and Miss Perry.
Dear families,
After two long and very busy terms, the students are now ready for the two week break from school.
We welcomed a record number of students from other schools into year 12 this year and the welcome they are given from previous Cornwallis students is always wonderful to see. We truly are a community, and I am immensely proud of the students.
Our year 13s have completed their first round of PPE (mock) exams and their conduct and approach to these has been exemplary. Results will be shared after the Christmas break.
Although the main body of exams finished last week, over a third of the cohort have sat their Criminology Controlled Assessment this week. This is an eight-hour exam run over three days and again the students have conducted themselves with aplomb.
Those that are considering university for the next steps in their education have been busy completing and sending their UCAS with many already in receipt of offers. A reminder for both parents and students that the deadline for equal consideration is 18:00 hours 29th January. Some institutions will accept applications after this date but there is no guarantee they will be considered.
Our year 12s have now completed one third of the academic year and have made a successful transition to Key Stage 5. For some this has been quite a challenge and for others, the transition to a more independent focus on learning and time management has been seamless. We do know that adjusting to sixth form life and expectations can be difficult and if you have any concerns about your child in this regard, please do get in touch with us and we will be pleased to support.
This week our annual Carol Service took place at St Peter's Church, Boughton Monchelsea. Parents and staff were invited to attend and although I myself was not able to be there, a special mention must go to Elijah O for his wonderful singing and Nicolette N and Lucy H for both giving a reading. All three were a credit to the sixth form community and I would like to nominate all three as my students of the week.
After Christmas we look forward to the forthcoming visit to New York. I cannot wait to go, and I am sure the students are as excited as me.
In January, I will be launching the World Challenge expedition. Those of you that have older children who came here may remember our last expedition to Ecuador which took place eight years ago. This time we are offering the opportunity for our current year 11 and 12 students to spend 10 nights in Norway under canvas. I will be holding a launch assembly for students in January which will be followed by a parent information evening. I will share further details with you on our return.
For now, I wish you all a happy and safe festive period. Students: rest and recuperate and come back ready for the next term ahead.
Mrs J Woollett, Head of Key Stage 5
