Dear parents/carers,
As we complete one of the longest academic terms, so we must reflect on the school's successes over the past eight weeks. I am delighted with the seamless integration of our new students in years 7 and 12, and the subsequent progress they have made since embarking on their secondary and sixth form careers, respectively. Furthermore, I must congratulate all other year groups for an equally positive return to school following the summer break. I am certain this momentum will continue into term 2, a term that sees year 11 and year 13 sit the first round of their PPEs in preparation for the 2025 summer exam series.
There are too many other fantastic initiatives, trips, sporting successes and individual achievements for me to mention here, but I will conclude by thanking all of our students, parents/carers and staff for your continued commitment to Cornwallis, our shared vision and moral purpose: to ensure we adhere to our SMILE mantra and truly have ambitions for all our students.
Cornwallis celebrated an outstanding set of GCSE results with 60% of students gaining a grade 4 or above in both English and Maths, whilst we registered a record 32% of students achieving a 5+ in English and Maths. Exceptional attainment and positive progress 8 scores should be noted in the following subjects: Biology, Maths, Drama, Dance, Food Tech and MFL (both Spanish and French) as well our ‘Home language’ students encompassing Persian, Chinese, Polish, Russian and Turkish. Furthermore, our KS4 teaching staff deserve considerable praise regarding the quality of their predictions. Although our data is currently unvalidated (and re-marks may improve the picture further) we predicted a progress 8 score of -0.33 for all Cornwallis students (including those educated off-site) and -0.21 for students based full time in school. We achieved -0.32 and -0.18 respectively. Not only is this a significant improvement from -0.46 and -0.35 from the 2023/24 results, it demonstrates how forensically our staff know their students and the incredible accuracy of their assessment data throughout the two year courses, to so precisely pin point students’ outcomes.
To improve outcomes and accuracy of predictions, were two of the tasks we set all departments and teachers last year, and is so often the case at Cornwallis, our outstanding staff have risen to the challenge.
Open Evening at Cornwallis was the busiest on record as we welcomed 526 families through our doors, which equates to approximately 1726 people. The three speeches were all filled to the rafters, and as always, the students stole the show with an exemplary, honest and heartfelt delivery. As we’ve come to expect: our departments shone; our student guides were outstanding, and the subsequent feedback from prospective parents and students was exceptional. Couple this with our record breaking open mornings, and you can see why we’re absolutely delighted. A total of 214 families joined us across four open mornings, to get an inside view of an operational Cornwallis Academy. Again, and as always: our staff and students were incredible in offering an honest and invaluable insight into the day-to-day workings of our school. A huge thank you to all involved.

This year has got off to a fantastic start. Students have been incredibly engaged in their learning across all key stage and excited to be back at school after the summer break. Some particular highlights from this term have been the poetry competition entrants and the wonderful work students have been completing with the RE department to celebrate the International Day of Peace. Take a look inside our bumper edition of Classroom Champions for more exceptional work!

On Wednesday the 16th of October, we held our Annual Awards Evening at Cornwallis Academy. This evening celebrated students in all year groups who have excelled in each subject area, as well as the school's scholarship programmes and within the school’s community.
This year, we invited approximately 400 parents and carers to the event held in the academy’s ‘Heartspace,’ to witness their children being presented with awards that recognise their hard work and achievements throughout the last academic year.
The event began with commendable piano playing from two talented sixth form musicians, Lucy Garland and Davyn Achampong, followed by speeches from the Head of School, Mr Sutton and Executive Head Teacher, Mrs McMahon. The evening saw over 300 awards being presented by Heads of Years to students who collected a certificate and a book of their choosing. We were honoured to present our Year 11 and scholarship students with engraved shields or trophies that we have now proudly displayed in the school’s trophy cabinet, as well as a smaller keepsake trophy. The ceremony was a tremendous success and an evening to remember.
I am extremely privileged to have had the opportunity to organise an evening that fully embodied the school’s SMILE ethos and there were certainly lots of smiles on the proud faces of all attendees. I look forward to welcoming more students and families to our celebrations next year.
On Thursday 26th September, our students and staff celebrated the European Day of Languages throughout the school day.
All forms took part in an International quiz, won by 8TM. Students enjoyed international foods in the canteen throughout the week, sampling dishes such as spaghetti bolognaise and Spanish paella. Teachers of all subjects also joined in by speaking different languages in their lessons; students graded the teachers on their linguistic abilities!
Miss Willetts offered more international treats in the heart space for all to enjoy. All students and staff enjoyed a truly multicultural day!
Alongside Cornwallis Academy’s support for Jeans for Genes on Friday 20th September, the House teams launched an initiative to encourage clothing donations for a local homeless charity.
Maidstone Homeless Care offer a day centre with support including food banks, emergency housing support and other necessities.
As always, the overwhelming generosity of the Cornwallis community led to a tsunami of donations and after organising and weighing, the results were as follows:
1. Linton 44 kg
2. Hubbards 39.2 kg
3. Hanson 26.6 kg
4. Heath 24 kg
5. Salts 20.4 kg
6. Loose 20.2 kg
We will be arranging a visit to the charity with our Student Leaders delivering all of these items after half term.
Thank you to all students, parents and staff who took part in our MacMillan coffee morning on the 27th September.
Thank you for baking and buying cakes.
We had a brilliant day and raised an amazing £1159.57 for this fantastic charity.
On the week commencing the 7th of October we celebrated world Mental Health day with a succession of assemblies delivered to each year group throughout the week. The aim was to raise further awareness about the importance of mental health in our community at Cornwallis, and also, to create an open dialogue about emotional well-being.
The assembly centred on three main topics: mental health awareness, coping strategies, and the importance of seeking support. In today’s fast-paced world, where academic pressures, social dynamics, and personal challenges can weigh heavily on students, addressing mental health has never been more essential.
Why It Matters: The assembly was an important reminder that mental health is just as crucial as physical health. Just as we take care of our bodies by eating well and exercising, we must take care of our minds. Mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of background, academic standing, or social circle, which makes events like this essential to foster understanding and support within our school community.
Key Takeaway from the assembly:
You are not alone: Mental health challenges affect people of all ages and backgrounds, and it’s essential to seek help if you're struggling.
Open conversations: Reducing the stigma around mental health starts with honest conversations. Talking about how we feel helps break down barriers.
Support is available: Whether through our school counsellor, trusted teachers, or mental health professionals, there are always people who are ready to listen and offer support.
A Step Forward: The Mental Health Assembly was not just an event, but a step forward in promoting a culture of understanding and wellness within our school. By encouraging open conversations, equipping students with helpful strategies, and emphasising the importance of seeking help, our school community is taking strides towards creating a safer, more supportive environment for all.
The assemblies were extremely successful and as a result of these there has been an increased referral rate from students wanting to access support for their Mental Health.
To celebrate the world Mental Health day on the 10th of October students were able to visit the intervention room to sit and talk with students to have open conversations about how they were feeling and also to collect leaflets about accessing support at school and also outside of the school community. It was wonderful to see so many students attend.
For staff at Cornwallis they could find a little treat in their pigeonhole as well as a Mental Health awareness badges to take away. Staff also had the opportunity to send appreciation cards to each other to share their kind words.
We look forward to celebrating Men’s Mental Health awareness on the 19th of November.
Dear Parents/Carers,
We are delighted to share with you an update on the successful start to the school year for our Year 7 students at Cornwallis Academy. It has been wonderful to see how quickly and confidently our Year 7 students have settled into secondary school life. Their positive attitudes and enthusiasm have been evident to both staff and their peers, and we are incredibly proud of how well they have embraced the challenges and new routines that come with this important transition. Starting secondary school can be a significant step for many students, but our Year 7s have shown exceptional resilience and adaptability. Both Miss Edwards and I have had the pleasure of visiting them in their tutor groups and lessons, and we are consistently impressed by their focus, engagement, and strong work ethic.
House Events
We are also excited to report that our House events are already well underway, with students showing fantastic team spirit and actively contributing to their respective Houses. Year 7 students have been enthusiastic participants, earning valuable house points and getting involved in the friendly competition during tutor time. On Monday, 23rd September, Year 7, alongside the other year groups, took part in our first House Event. Students worked collaboratively in groups within their House to complete a range of activities, and it was fantastic to witness the camaraderie and team spirit across the different year groups.
European Day of Languages – Thursday, 26th October
Year 7 students recently participated in the European Day of Languages, where they had the opportunity to explore and celebrate Europe’s rich linguistic diversity. During lessons, students took part in engaging activities, and they were also able to sample a variety of European foods. This event was not only fun but also served to highlight the importance of learning languages and appreciating different cultures. The enthusiasm and curiosity shown by the students were truly inspiring, as they embraced the opportunity to learn more about the world around them.
School Photos – Monday, 30th October
Individual school photos for Year 7 were taken on Friday, 8th October. These will be their official Year 7 school photos, and details regarding how to purchase photo packages will be sent out soon. We hope these will provide a lasting memory of this exciting new chapter in their school journey.
Meet the Tutor Evening
A huge thank you to all of you who attended our Meet the Tutor Evening. It was wonderful to see so many parents and carers engaged in meaningful conversations about their child’s progress and the year ahead. This evening provided an invaluable opportunity for us to build on our partnership with you, ensuring that we work together to support each student in achieving their full potential. Your feedback and involvement are deeply appreciated, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration throughout the year to ensure your child’s success.
Fire Safety Assembly
Recently, all Year 7 students attended a Fire Safety Assembly, delivered by a member of Kent Fire & Rescue. During this important session, students learned about fire safety procedures, both in school and at home, and gained valuable knowledge about how to keep themselves and others safe in the event of a fire. The students were highly attentive and engaged throughout, asking thoughtful questions and demonstrating a strong understanding of the key messages shared.

Dear Year 8 families,
Students in year 8 have had such a successful return to school. We have had an extremely busy term which has been one of the longest and full of different activities. I have been exceptionally proud of how the year group have been shining examples to our new year 7 cohort.
This year we have re-launched our house system within the school. Students are now part of 6 newly named houses, Hubbards, Loose, Hanson, Linton, Heath, Salts. Please do talk to your children about their house and the activities they have been taking part in this term. We have many house competitions running and students all participated in a house afternoon with children from different year groups.
We have had a number of year group assemblies, which have looked at subjects such as mental health, ‘Jeans For Genes Day’ and Anti Bullying week. We spoke about being kind and respectful and I congratulated the year group on sharing my values. I made my expectations very clear that we need to be kind and respectful to everyone but also to ourselves. This week I will be holding a Rewards Assembly for those students who have excelled in certain subjects and will also hand out prizes for attendance. Over 30 students in the year group were also invited to awards evening where we celebrated individual achievements in year 7.
As an academy we had another oversubscribed and successful open evening and six subsequent open mornings. Many of the year group volunteered and guided potential families around the site. I cannot thank each student enough for talking so positively about the school and sharing our values with the families that visited.
As term 1 comes to an end, I would like to remind you of a few expectations. Please can I ask you to talk about this over the two week break. I place a great importance on being prepared for learning and being smart for school.
School uniform: Please could you check over your child's uniform this half term period to ensure all is accounted for. Blazers are a compulsory part of our school uniform and must be worn at all times whilst in the building and school shoes must also be smart and presentable, some children are wearing shoes, rather casual in style. We are looking to ensure all students have work style shoes so please when purchasing new ones, bear this in mind.
Skirt length: We have also found that girls are regularly turning over their skirts making them shorter. I know this is most likely done on the way to and from school. If you can discuss the concerns of wearing very short items of clothing in a work environment.
Jewellery / Make up: Jewellery is starting to become an issue, only a watch and small stud or small sparkling earrings can be worn, any other items will be confiscated. There have also been cases of false nails, eye lashes and excessive use of make up, none of which are acceptable in school.
School equipment: Please could you double check that your child has a full pencil case for when we return for term 2 and if any items are missing please could these be replenished. Compulsory equipment is as follows: 2 black pens, pencil, rubber, ruler, sharpener, protractor, compass and a scientific calculator (preferably a Casio fx-83GTX or Casio fx-85GTX). Students also need a planner which must be signed by parents each week. We also ask students to have a book or reading material with them to make sure
Below please find names of all the students receiving awards this term. They have achieved remarkably well and are such good examples, continually demonstrating the Cornwallis SMILE. Really well done to the students that have been selected this term, it is always a very hard decision with so many of year 8 working diligently.

Dear Year 9 families,
At the start of term 1 we spoke to our students about the importance of maturity and becoming a young adult as they progress through Year 9. As we come to the end of the term, I have noticed many of our students have adopted this message and have been keen to demonstrate their maturity which has been fantastic to see. This is their final year as a key stage 3 student and in term 3 will be selecting their GCSE option subjects to undertake through to year 11. More details regarding our Year 9 parents' evening and options' evening will follow in Term 2.
Recently I spoke at our annual awards evening and once again it was so lovely to see so many families all gathering in one place to celebrate their children's successes. This truly was a magical evening and a glowing example of the excellent efforts and progress our students made last year. I look forward to seeing more of our Cornwallis SMILE being demonstrated across this academic year too.
During the last week of term, students listened to an ‘Anti-bullying’ assembly along with this year's theme ‘Choose Respect’. This was to raise awareness of ‘Anti-bullying’ week which will take place in the first week back after our October half term (11th-15th November). When students return there will be a selection of tutor time activities to discuss bullying, what it means and how we can prevent it within our school community. During the week on Tuesday 12th November it will be ‘odd socks’ day where students will be permitted to wear odd socks as part of this key message to remember that everyone is different and that everyone should be respected. Please do encourage your child to participate.
Finally, I would like to personally thank you all for your continued support and should there be any concerns or issues about returning for term 2, that you contact us so that we can support. We look forward to seeing all the students return to school Monday 11th November 2024.

Have a great and restful half term.
The Year 10 team.
Dear parents/carers,
The year 11s have made an excellent start to the school year. Their attendance at revision sessions both at lunchtime and after school has been exceptional, and bodes extremely well for their mock examinations which begin in late November.
The students are having individual, tailored career interviews with Ms McIntyre (Careers Adviser) to discuss possible options post 16, which can include A Levels and college courses. She has been very impressed with the fact that students have already started to think clearly about routes they wish to pursue.
There are two very important dates on the horizon. Firstly, on November 14th there is Year 11 Parents' Evening, which will give parents and students the chance to speak to teachers in advance of the mock exams. Secondly, on November 20th, the Sixth Form Open Evening takes place. This gives students and parents the opportunity to speak with Cornwallis teachers about 6th form options for the 25-26 academic year, and is an invaluable evening for making an informed choice post 16.
Finally, congratulations to all our amazing award winners for Term 1. The winners are listed at the bottom. In the meantime, we wish all our students a restful half term, and look forward to seeing them back in school on Monday November 11th.

Dear families,
As we reach the finish of what feels like the never ending term I wanted to firstly say how well our new year 12 cohort of students has settled into sixth form life. We have a record number of students who have joined us from other schools all of whom have been made very welcome by those that have been with us before. At the start of the year I promised to learn all of our year 12 students' names and I am getting there!
It is a massive adjustment for even the most self motivated students and I think all will say that the transition is tough. It is often said, that A levels are the hardest exams you will ever sit and I have no doubt that this is true in the majority of instances. There are of course always exceptions. This coupled with a different approach to learning - students needing to be far more independent in researching and wider reading; the students that utilise their time effectively are those that are the most successful.
Our year 13 students have also settled back into school and as I said in my welcome back assemblies in September, this year will pass by very quickly. I appreciate the slight contradiction to my opening lines but the remaining terms do become shorter.
For them, the next term brings a series of PPE (mock) exams. These will predominantly assess topics that have been covered in year 12 however your child's individual subject teachers will have explained what will be included. These exams are an excellent tool for both teachers and students to identify their areas of knowledge which are secure and those that need some revision. Your child will receive in individual timetable nearer the time.
This term we have launched a series of Gresham College lectures. Students have two opportunities on Wednesday during either lesson 2 or lesson 3 to come along a watch a short lecture on a given topic. So far this term we have covered the link between the size of our brains and intelligence, human rights and the way stories can shape our lives. We finish this term with how businesses are financed. Next term we have a Media Studies related lecture and I will remind the students nearer the time. I would encourage students to come along even if the lecture of the week doesn't directly link to their academic studies. The human rights lecture was a real eye opener and those that attended came away with more understanding of the rights we have in the UK in comparison to say the US. We finish each week with a very informal discussion about what we've just seen and heard and I have enjoyed sharing thoughts and ideas with those that have attended.
We were pleased to see so many of you at our first parents' evening this week. Your continued support is appreciated as always.
We are now in full flow of the UCAS 2025 application season and I am delighted that we have three students who have applied to Oxford to read Law and one student who has applied for Dentistry. These applications have an earlier deadline for submission which passed last Tuesday. Well done to all four some of whom have already received offers.
For the remainder of those students who are considering an application, our tutors are available to support with qualifications and personal statements and each year 13 form class has a dedicated session in the study room where they can also access the expertise of Ms McIntyre our Careers Adviser.
For those year 13s looking to undertake further studies at college or enter the world of work, they will be able to book a one-to-one appointment with Ms McIntyre next term. Anyone considering an apprenticeship should begin to make applications now - competition is always fierce and again, guidance and support is available.
Our year 12 students have all now picked their lower school support sessions and will begin attending these after the half term break. This is a scheme that we have been running for a number of years and the benefits for our lower school cohort not to mention the soft skills that students develop are so important in the modern work place and are immeasurable.
We have our termly rewards trip to look forward to and Mrs Robinson and I are considering several options for this - details to follow next term.
I wanted to end with saying a huge thank you for your support with our new attendance initiative. Understandably there was a little push back from some students however, all appreciate the reasons for the new approach and that it is them who will ultimately benefit. We do know that some of our students travel quite some distance each day from outside of the Maidstone area. We will always take this into account and welcome a call from you to discuss if this has an impact on attendance to morning registration.
As always if you have concerns or questions, please do get in touch with either myself or our Student Support Manager, Ms O'Brien and one of us will be pleased to assist in anyway we can.
