The fixtures this term have only been associated with football, with other sports such as rugby, netball, basketball and badminton planned for term 2.
Most of the fixtures have been with the boys, and this is an area for development for term 2.
The 6th form fixtures dominate term 1, mainly due to the organised Kent League that starts straight away. However, the lower years do have Cup matches early in the season with league games spread-out over a 4 term period.
At the moment, the school has a 50%-win rate, which is not too bad considering that a lot of the games have come from more challenging competitions such as the Kent Cups and English School Cups.
The other competition was more of a fun, get involved tournament with various games.
Most staff have been involved. Although this should even out more as the academic year continues and the introduction of more sports and competitions.
Football Scholarship Update from Mr Robinson
Year 7:
Our first Year 7 game saw us play in the Kent Cup against Borden Grammar School, which was always going to be a tough fixture. As expected, being a new team who have never played together before, we started slowly and found ourselves under a lot of pressure in the first half. 2 quick goals meant we were battling to come back after half-time. The team continued to develop a better understanding of each other and we nearly had the ball in the goal twice. After a much improved second half we did not concede but unfortunately, we lost 0-2. There were some great individual performances and a very good start from all players.
Another tough draw in the Year 7 English Schools’ Cup meant we faced another strong opposition. The weather and the condition of the pitch made it difficult to play football for both teams but after the final whistle, we were again on the losing side. Despite losing 1-4, we played much better as a team. We started to look stronger in tackles, more composed in possession and even got our first goal, thanks to a lovely header from Archie M. I was proud of the feedback that all students listened to and tried to improve on.
Player of the Term: Olly Williams – Excellent leadership as our captain and centre defender. Continuous organisation of the defence and covering play meant he was consistently in the right place to stop any attacks. A very good attitude in both games despite us losing. He never gave up and gave it his all.
Year 8:
The English Schools’ Cup game against Hundred of Hoo School was a tricky affair on a small, bobbly pitch. We generally thrive on exploiting large spaces behind defences but were unable to do so on this occasion. We competed well physically but lacked the technical intricacy on the day to unlock tiny spaces to cause enough problems to win the game. Despite a valiant effort, he came away second best after losing 2-0.
Player of the Term: Eve Riley - Excellent attitude to training and games, excellent behaviour, listens well to feedback/instructions and implements what is asked of her in a variety of positions
Year 9:
Year 9 have had an excellent start to the year. They remain in the Kent Cup after a very good 5-2 win against Meopham School. However, perhaps the best result of the term was against Oakwood Park Grammar School in the English Schools’ Cup. The game finished 2-1 to Cornwallis in what was an extremely tight affair. A massive improvement for the Year 9s who lost 7-0 in the same fixture last year. Unfortunately, the next round proved to be a little too far for the Year 9s as they lost 8-0 to a very strong Rainham Mark Grammar School side. Positive signs for the team though for when the league fixtures start next term.
Player of the Term: Mitchell Johnstone - Extreme dedication to the team and looking very accomplished in what is a non-familiar position for him.
Year 10:
Year 10 put up a very strong performance against a tough Norton Knatchbull School in the English Schools’ Cup. Cornwallis took the game to extra time thanks to an equaliser by Ianys Andronie, however injuries and tiredness meant Norton pulled away in extra time to win the game 4-1. Huge improvements and plaudits for the Year 10s in a fixture they lost 9-0 in Year 7. Very positive signs for the squad who hope to go one better this year and win their league at The Gallagher.
Player of the Term: Lennon Morgan – Continuous dedication to the team.
Year 11:
Our first Year 11 game in the English Schools Cup saw us play an unknown opposition from Surrey. With a few players missing due to injury, it was always going to be a challenge. The pitch was a leveller for both teams as the surface was very slippery. Throughout the game, there were some key battles including our defence, who were very strong and brave on several occasions. Just as it looked like it would go to penalties, a great ‘goal scorers’ type goal in the box from Zac H meant we ended up winning 1-0 and making it through to the next round.
Player of the Term: Kyri Warren – Stepped up to be our goalkeeper even though he is a year younger but never looked out of place. He was confident in his box and made some great saves to keep us in the game. His communication and distribution helped organise our defence and create attacking opportunities. A mature performance.
