Dear parents/carers,
As we approach the end of another term, it’s been lovely reflecting on all of the excellent student achievements. It has been a very busy spring term, with many trips, events and exciting activities. Our Year 11 and Year 13 students have now commenced their summer exams, and the rest of the year groups have either completed or been preparing for their end of year assessments.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt gratitude to three of our Parent Council members. Mrs Leonard, Mrs Watts and Mrs Wensley have been part of our Parent Council, since it was first formed in September 2017, when their children joined us in Year 7. Throughout the seven years, their contributions have been invaluable in shaping such a positive and enriching environment for our students. Their commitment to our school community, through their time, effort, and input, has not only enhanced the educational experiences, it has also had a significant impact on the success of Cornwallis. Thank you once again for your tireless dedication. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
I hope you all enjoy reading our end of term newsletter, including the individual year group sections. I wish you and your family a relaxing break and look forward to welcoming students back to school on Monday 3rd June.
Take care,
Mrs McMahon

KENT TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2024
We would like to congratulate Mr Swain, one of our PE teachers, for winning the 2024 Kent Teacher of the Year Award! The Kent Teacher of the Year awards is a wonderful way to celebrate those working in education across Kent and Medway. On behalf of the school, we would like to say a huge well done and congratulations to Mr Swain on this fantastic achievement!
Cornwallis Academy will be closed for the May half term break between Monday 27th May and Friday 31st May. We will re-open to our students on Monday 3rd June 2024.

Please could we ask that Year 10 parents return the signed authorisation sheet located at the back of the Examination Handbook. This was given to the students a few weeks ago. This is so that your child has a complete understanding of the process, rules and regulations for examinations ahead of the PPE/Mock exams starting in 17th June for two weeks. Thank you in advance.
UNIFORM / EQUIPMENT REMINDER
Coats: Sport tops/hoodies are not permitted as a replacement item for a coat, so will therefore be confiscated.
Footwear: Black closed toe formal leather shoes for use throughout the school. Trainers are not permitted.
Jewellery: Students are permitted to wear a watch and a small single stud in each ear (gold, silver, crystal) no larger than 5mm in diameter. If students do not adhere to the jewellery expectations, forbidden items will be confiscated.
False eyelashes: False eyelashes are not permitted.
Nails: Nails should be kept to a reasonable length. Nail polish and false nails are not permitted.
As always, your support with ensuring your child adheres to the expectations, is greatly appreciated. Should you have any questions regarding the uniform policy, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s pastoral team.
As part of our ‘Ready to Learn’ routine at Cornwallis, we expect students to attend with the following equipment as a minimum:
Planner
Pencil case
Pens
Pencils
Ruler
Highlighter
Protractor
Pair of compass
Scientific calculator
This will ensure that students are able to access all learning that takes place in lessons. If you have any concerns with the above, or need support, please contact your child’s year team in the first instance.
The term started with an explosion of colour, as we celebrated our 65th anniversary with an exhilarating Colour Run event! Held on Friday, April 19th, the sun graced us with its presence just long enough for us to stay dry and for the festivities to proceed.
It was a joyous occasion with participation from all year groups, from Year 7 to Year 13. As the afternoon unfolded, laughter filled the air as students and staff alike found themselves decorated in a variety of colours. The consensus amongst students was unanimous – it was the best day ever! There was an undeniable sense of camaraderie and community spirit.
For our Year 11 and Year 13 students, who are soon to embark on their exams, the Colour Run served as a well-deserved break. Amidst the pressures of academic pursuits, it's essential to create moments where children can simply be children.
As we reflect on this milestone anniversary, we are reminded of the importance of fostering memorable experiences that not only enrich the school journey but also nurture community spirit.
On Wednesday 1st May 2024, Mrs Holmes, Mr Swain, Mr Upham and myself took 50 students from across Years 7 to 10 up to St George’s Park to watch our Under 19 Academy team play in the final of the National Academies Football Cup Competition. All students from our Football Scholarship Programme were invited along with other students, who have represented Cornwallis this year. Having taught for more than 20 years, this was the quickest response I have seen to a school trip and we were fully booked within 2 hours.
Although we did not get a chance to fully look around St George’s Park, it was clear to see some of the amazing facilities that our National team use when training for their matches. It is fair to say that our students were impressed.
The game itself was fast-paced and nail-biting at times, with both us and York F.C. having several chances throughout. The atmosphere was brilliant and our students really got involved with the singing and a little bit of winding the opposition up. When the winning goal went in after 94 minutes, it was great to see our students run over to celebrate with the Maidstone players – a great way to win.
A big thank you to our students who represented Cornwallis with pride and were well behaved throughout. It was a fabulous opportunity for them to see what teamwork and dedication can bring in terms of sporting success.
Finally, the night ended in the best way possible with a 4-hour coach journey home listening to the beautiful sounds of our students singing Maidstone F.C. songs at the top of their lungs! 😊
A small group of Year 12 A Level Sociology students went to Canterbury Christ Church University College on 8th May, along with students from a number of schools from across Kent, for their Sociology Conference. As well as hearing about some of the latest developments within the Sociology of Education, there was an opportunity to receive revision support in preparation for the AS exams which began the following week.
Thinking longer term, there was also an opportunity to find out what studying Social Science at Degree level would entail and there were some helpful hints on how to write effective personal statements for UCAS applications. ‘This is part of our determination to tap into a range of people and organisations who can support and inspire our students. There was something for everyone!’, commented Mr Andy Lee, Head of RE and Sociology.
In April, we took our entire Year 12 cohort to the University and Apprenticeship Fair at the University of Kent, where they had a fantastic time exploring their future opportunities.
The event allowed students to interact with representatives from apprenticeship providers and wide range of universities, including Russell Group and red brick institutions. They had the opportunity to participate in seminars and explore the university campus, gaining a tangible sense of university life. Feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive. They found the fair both informative and enjoyable, appreciating the chance to engage with a diverse range of providers and consider both academic and vocational pathways. The visit was a resounding success, leaving students better informed about their next steps.
BRANDS HATCH
On the 10th May, Year 9 students from Cornwallis Academy and New Line Learning Academy embarked on a unique opportunity into the world of Motorsport. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of HP with Intel, MB Motorsports and Misco, the students were treated to a fully-funded experience. One which we hope will have ignited their passion for a future in motorsport.
The event wasn’t just about the adrenaline rush of racing; the aim was to showcase careers and opportunities across professional motorsport and STEM activities.
As part of the day, students were given exclusive access to behind-the-scenes tours ahead of Round Two of the British Touring Car Championship along with a look at the BMW 330e M Sport race car.
One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity to meet and interact with professional driver Jake Hill. From sharing his insights into his career journey (which started with washing car tyres) to offering tips on mastering the art of racing. Jake explained how it was his determination, resilience and passion that had kept him going at times when he wanted to give up.
Students were put to the test in a racing simulator challenge. The competitive spirit was obvious as students vied for the top spot.
YEAR 7 BIKE-A-BILITY COURSE
Last week, some of the year 7 cohort took part in a Bikeability course. Students spent time preparing on the school site and then took part in a full day cycling on the roads. The team who trained and taught the students, highly praised their conduct and sensible attitude, commenting that they were a pleasure to be with.
YEAR 9 UNIVERSITY LIFE TALK
On Monday 29th April, 60 Year 9 students attended a one-hour workshop delivered by ambassadors of Kent University, designed to answer the ‘Who? What? When? Where? How?’ questions about university. Students were encouraged to reflect on possible reasons for going to university, what they could study, where they might live and how studying at university differs from being at school. Our students engaged fantastically in these interactive sessions, broadening their understanding of university life, including how they would learn and what extra-curricular opportunities are available. Students were keen to ask questions and gain an insight into where their GCSE studies could lead them. Our Year 9 students really did us proud, demonstrating maturity and respect throughout, with the visitors commenting on how all students did our school proud.
YEAR 10 UNIVERSITY TRIP
On Friday 3rd May, our Year 10 Student Support Manager, Miss Perry took 14 year 10 students to Kent University in Canterbury so they could experience aspects of life in Higher Education. They started their day in the Lecture Theatre where they were greeted by staff and students. They were fully engaged and excited to be in a university environment. The day consisted of seminars which focussed on topics including future human life, what life would be like if AI took over, and what jobs wouldn’t exist anymore in that scenario. This was a thought-provoking way for them to sample university styled teaching and questioning. The Year 10s relished the opportunity to embrace a different environment and we're a credit to the school.
YEAR 13 PROM
This year's prom took place at the Weald of Kent Golf club. The rain that had fallen throughout the day, cleared just in time for us to enjoy the outside terrace overlooking the golf course, before we sat down for a formal dinner. This was followed by non-stop dancing all the way until midnight. It was a wonderful evening - a testament to the well-rounded young adults our year 13s have become.
Cornwallis Academy’s Euro 2024 Extravaganza
To help celebrate the upcoming Euro 2024 Football competition and hopefully England bringing it home, Cornwallis Academy will be hosting our very own Euro 2024 Extravaganza. The Cornwallis Academy’s Euro 2024 Extravaganza will help celebrate teamwork, competition and communication across all members of our community.
During the Week Beginning 3rd June 2024, each Tutor Group will randomly select a country that they will support throughout Euro 2024. Once this has been completed, we will send out all the details so that everyone is aware of who has who. Then, hopefully on Friday 14th June 2024 (the Opening Ceremony and start of the competition), we will have our own Opening Ceremony of sorts. More details on this will follow later.
Throughout the competition, regular updates will be given such as results, which Tutor Groups have been knocked out and points will be attached to our House system for things such as how far they get in the competition and how many goals they score. Finally, the finalists and eventual winners will receive a special prize.
Despite the obvious (England winning), I hope that we can all engage with the competition through discussions and celebrations.
Dear Year 7 families,
During term 5, Year 7 have been working really hard and showing the Cornwallis SMILE in lessons and around the school. Students had their end of year exams and were given the opportunity to show their teachers what they have learned. I know many of the year group spent time studying at home, revising and making sure they were fully prepared. Teaching staff have marked their exams and you will be given exam and working at grades in the end of year report. If you have any questions about the results or reports please do contact the school and speak to myself or the year 7 team.
Whilst writing this, I am preparing to meet with you all on Thursday evening. It is our annual parents' evening where you and your child will meet with their teachers. These evenings are vital in ensuring you can support your child with their learning, it gives students the opportunity to listen to praise from their teachers and also understand areas of development.
I want to take this opportunity to remind you of a few school rules. I have very high expectations of the year group and hope that you can support me in ensuring your children meet these expectations. I understand that the weather is starting to get hotter, finally! Students are expected to wear blazers around the school at all times, unless informed of the summer uniform season which normally takes place during term 6. We are happy for jumpers to be left at home but ties and blazers must be worn unless students are instructed otherwise by staff. Some students are bringing chewing gum and wearing false eyelashes to school, the reason for the strict uniform and make up policy is to help students in preparation for their working life, please ensure these items are not in school. We have also had an increasing number of trainers worn to school, I understand that shoes can break especially at this time of the school year but please contact the year team if your child’s shoes are broken or unwearable. Please can you also make sure that your child has the correct equipment with them, at all times. Incredibly some students are not coming to school with a full pencil case. If this can be checked over half term in preparation for term 6 I will be very appreciative.
At the end of this term, students have been awarded by their subject teachers for showing outstanding achievement in lessons. Some students have been exceptional and produced very good classwork, homework and show real focus in their learning. The students below have been given the awards this term.

Next term is our final term of year 7. It is a busy one, students will be taking part in enrichment week activities and we have sports day planned at the end of term. This is slightly different to the traditional sports days run by primary schools and students are given the option to take part in a wide array of activities on the day. Term 6 is also the time when Cornwallis will welcome the new year 6 cohort to the school. It seems almost impossible that it was a whole year ago your children were doing their induction sessions but time has raced over the past year. Please talk to your children about how quickly the time has passed and remind them to make the new students feel comfortable and welcome in the school community.
I wish you all a wonderful half term and hope that all students are able to get some rest ready for the final term of the year. Please be in touch if there are any questions, I look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday 3rd June 2024.
Kind regards,
Mrs Clark-Keen, Head of Year 7

Dear Year 8 families,
As this term draws to a close, I would like to congratulate the students with their efforts and commitment during term 5 as well as during their End of Year Examinations (EOYE). As we progress into the final term, subjects will now be able to cross reference your childs progress across the academic year alongside their EOY assessment. The class set your child will be in for Year 9 will be found out when students receive their timetables in September. Set lists can change depending on the progress shown by students across the academic year so please do continue to encourage your child to revise well for any assessments and to aim for 100% attendance. High attendance/punctuality is proven to strongly correlate to good academic outcomes therefore this must prioritised as the year group work towards commencing their GCSEs half way through Year 9.
Finally, I would like to wish you all a nice relaxing half term break with your families and we look forward to welcoming all students back on Monday 3rd June 2024.

Dear Year 9 families,
This term, our Year 9 students have been lucky enough to partake in two externally delivered workshops, lead by Kent and Medway Progression Federation and Kent University. The first took place on Monday 29th April, with 60 Year 9 students attending a one-hour workshop delivered by ambassadors of Kent University, designed to answer the ‘Who? What? When?
On Monday 20th May a selection of students took part in the Create Calm, Wellbeing Workshop, led by the Kent and Medway Progression Federation, that we advertised back in Term 3. During the workshop students were encouraged to switch off from their everyday pressures by participating in an activity that focused solely on creative expression. The workshop encouraged relaxation, creativity and reflection, whilst improving the confidence and self-esteem of our students. Students were asked how they felt people viewed them on the outside and how this differed from their inner self. Students were asked to creatively decorated matchboxes, with the outside representing what people see and the inside representing how we see ourselves and feel. Once again, students engaged well throughout and were a real reflection of the Cornwallis SMILE.

Dear Year 10 Families,
This has been a busy and productive term, with many fantastic opportunities for Year 10 students. On Friday 3rd May, Year 10 Student Support Manager Miss Perry took 14 year 10 students to Kent University in Canterbury so they could experience aspects of life in Higher Education. They started their day in the Lecture Theatre where they were greeted by staff and students. They were fully engaged and excited to be in a university environment. The day consisted of seminars which focussed on topics including future human life, what life would be like if AI took over, and what jobs wouldn’t exist anymore in that scenario. Students were given opportunities to share their opinions and discuss with non Cornwallis Year 10s.
This was a thought provoking way for them to sample university styled teaching and questioning. The Year 10s relished the opportunity to embrace a different environment and we're a credit to the school.
This term, Year 10 students participating in the Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award have undertaken their Practice Expedition, which took place in Kingsdown (Dover/Deal). They took part in 3 days of training and practice activities ranging from first-aid, outdoor cooking to map reading and navigating. Students were lucky enough to glimpse the Northern Lights display from their campsite. Their qualifying Silver Expedition takes places this coming bank holiday weekend – good luck to all participants! Thank you to Mr Clapp and his team for organising such a wonderful expedition.
On June 17th, the Year 10 examinations commence. It's important that all students focus on revision and exam preparation in the lessons after half term. The results which students gain from these exams will often be the deciding factor in group settings for next year, and will be used when students start applying for sixth form courses in Year 11.
We wish all our students a relaxing holiday.

Dear Year 11 parents/carers,
As we approach the end of term 5, we reflect on the significant progress and accomplishments of our Year 11 students. This term has been a combination of GCSE preparation and the beginning of their GCSEs. Our students have demonstrated a remarkable commitment to their learning, and we are confident that their hard work will pay off in their exams.
I would like to congratulate the cohort on their fantastic attendance, conduct and work ethic in their GCSE exams. We have received such positive feedback from staff and our invigilation team. In addition, they have been recognised for their wonderful commitment to revision sessions and extra-curricular classes, maximising the opportunities that the school are presenting to give them the best opportunity of reaching/exceeding their potential.
I would like to remind you of the importance of students continuing to attend school as normal. Firstly, I would like to clarify that the school does not instigate ‘study leave’ until a date next term. As a school, we feel there is no better preparation for GCSE exams than to be with their classroom teachers, who can utilise their experience and knowledge to support students understanding. It is imperative that students continue to access these opportunities until our official leavers’ day next term. We want to ensure that all students feel supported, doing our utmost to fulfil their potential and attain the best grades possible, which is the primary objective of our collapsed timetable. Every day students will experience a mix of their normal lessons, targeted revision in a subject with an upcoming exam or will complete a GCSE assessment. Students should only be absent from school with supported medical evidence. The cohort have been fantastic so far and we want to have an extremely positive end to Year 11 by utilising all the resources the school offers.

Colour Run
Prior to the beginning of the GCSE series, the year group got to experience what it arguably one of the best events at Cornwallis Academy – The Colour Run! The students had an amazing time as they walked/ran around the school field whilst being sprayed with powder. The students had the best time and commented that it was one of the best things they have done during their time at school!
Leavers' Day
I can confirm that the Year 11 Official Leavers Day will be on Monday 10th June. We have chosen this date as the vast majority of key examinations have been complete, and as a school we feel we would have maximised the time spent with students to ensure they are all every successful. The year group must attend school in normal school uniform, due to having their English exam in the morning. For those wishing to have shirts signed, please can I request this is brought with them in their bag. After the exam has finished, I will deliver their Leavers' Assembly, and students will have an opportunity to sign shirts and take pictures. After this date, students will only be required to attend for their exams, in which they must continue to attend in full school uniform. Please can I ask for your support in ensuring this takes place.
The year 11 team wish the students the very best of luck in their remaining exams, we know they have all prepared and will give their all, getting the grades they deserve!
Good luck!

This term, like every term has been an exceptionally busy one.
We have visited the University of Kent at Canterbury with the year twelve students to give them a flavour of what university life could look like and the invaluable opportunity to interact with representatives from every single university in the country.
A mixture of year twelve and thirteen students took part in a Mental Health First Aid Awareness course delivered by our colleagues at Youth Resilience. Although I know the students found some of the statistics shocking, they all came away with a deeper understanding of mental health and wellbeing. My hope is for the year twelve students to become mentors to the lower school in the new school year.
We also held our second whole school colour run and it was great to see so many of the Sixth Form students get involved. We as a team also got stuck in and great fun was had by all. I'm not sure who enjoyed it more ....us or the students !
Although we still have one more term to go, this term feels as though we begin to say farewell to our year thirteens and it is a bitter sweet feeling for myself and the team. On one hand we are sad to see the students move on but at the same time we are immensely proud of the young people they have become. I wish them all every future success.
Our prom took place a little earlier than usual but the weather was kind enough to allow us to use the outside terrace. A wonderful evening of food, dancing and fun was had by all at the Weald of Kent Golf Club. Photos from the evening are on the school's website under the Sixth Form tab.
Last week we held our year thirteen leavers' assembly. We began the morning with a breakfast all together and acknowledged those with outstanding attendance records as well as tutor, student support manager and head of year awards. As is tradition, we finish with a reminder of some of the bloopers and funny moments as well as memories of trips and visits that have happened during their time at Cornwallis. I would also like to publicly thank our year thirteen tutors Mrs Manser, Mrs Gollan, Mrs Pellow and Mrs Boorman, for their hard work and dedication in supporting the students through the year.
This week we ended the term with two visits. On Tuesday a group of students again visited the University of Kent at Canterbury but this time, the focus was "Beyond Sixth Form". This is a programme that we have been working on with UKC for the past four or five years. It is a great opportunity for our students to explore in depth what university means for them. They have the opportunity to look at course choices and how uni life differs as well as a tour of accommodation and the social side of life there.
Our second visit of the week was the year twelve reward trip to Thorpe Park. Sadly the weather wasn't quite what we had hoped for but all that came had a great time.
I wanted to finish with what is in fact the most important element of this term. We are now very much immersed in external exams for both year groups and I am extremely proud of the students' conduct and approach to what is a very stressful time for all. As a reminder, morning exams start at 9am and afternoon exams start at 1pm ( there are a few exceptions which your child will be aware of). Could I please ask for your support in ensuring that your child arrives in good time to ensure a smooth start for all candidates.
Thank you always for your continued support. Students; enjoy a well earned rest. Use your time wisely and stay safe and well.
