Headteacher welcome

As we approach the end of another remarkable term, our school has a great deal to be proud of. I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we've shared, and express my deepest gratitude for the unwavering support and dedication of our entire school community. We can take great pride in the accomplishments of our students, the dedication of our staff, and the support of our families. Together, we have created a vibrant and nurturing environment for learning and personal development.

Christmas jumper day and ‘Wallis Wonderland’

Yesterday was our annual Christmas jumper day tradition, as well as our Wallis Wonderland rewards event. The students had a thoroughly enjoyable time!

Cornwallis food drive

Once again, the Cornwallis food drive has been a huge success with many donations. Thank you so much, it really is greatly appreciated. Your kindness and generosity is what makes our community spirit so special. My particular thanks to Miss Sladden for doing such a fantastic job coordinating this.

School Production - ‘Oliver!’

As the curtains close on another remarkable school production, I am overwhelmed with gratitude and pride. The success of our production ‘Oliver Jr!’ is a testament to the collaborative spirit, dedication, and talent that defines Cornwallis. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this event, whether you were on stage, behind the scenes, or part of the enthusiastic audience. A standing ovation to our talented performers! Your hard work, commitment, and passion were evident in every line delivered, every note sung, and every dance move executed. Your performances were truly exceptional, and you made us all immensely proud. Behind every great show is a team of dedicated staff - my sincere thanks to the Performing Arts department and numerous volunteers, who worked tirelessly to guide and inspire our students. Your hard work and attention to detail did not go unnoticed.

Staff leavers

This is also the time of year when we often say goodbye to some of our colleagues. Today we say goodbye to Mrs Hatch (Science teacher and Lead Practitioner) and Mrs Westland (School librarian). I would like to thank them both for all their hard work and dedication to the school. I wish them all the very best for the future.

We are currently consulting on our Admissions Policy for the 2025 intake. The consultation period will run from Friday 15th December 2023 until Friday 26th January 2024; during this time, stakeholders are invited to express their views and any concerns about admission arrangements at Cornwallis Academy. For more information, click here.

On behalf of all Cornwallis staff, may I take this opportunity of wishing you and your families a safe and restful Christmas. I sincerely hope that whatever your circumstances, you are able to enjoy the festivities and spend quality time with your loved ones. I look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Wednesday 3rd January.

Congratulations to Lexie Chance and Dillon Masters from our Year 8 Art Scholarship group, who have been selected to exhibit work in the Maidstone Young Artist Award - under 14 category.

Congratulations also to Elle Rees from last year’s Year 13 A Level. Elle's sculpture has been selected in the over 15 category.

Work was selected from hundreds of submissions from across Kent, and it is a wonderful achievement for students to exhibit in a public gallery.

Their work will be on display in Maidstone Museum and Art Gallery in February where judging will take place.

Visit to Disneyland

In the spirit of the festive season, we are thrilled to share the enchanting story of Cornwallis Academy's spectacular visit to Disneyland Paris that unfolded at the start of December! Our energetic students from Years 8, 9, and 10,  immersed themselves in the magic of Disney, creating unforgettable memories that will forever be etched in their hearts.

As our students entered Disneyland Paris, they were greeted by a winter wonderland adorned with twinkling lights, festive decorations, and the unmistakable charm of the holiday season. The air was filled with excitement as they embarked on a magical journey through the park's enchanting lands.

The festivities continued with spellbinding parades and heartwarming winter shows that captivated our students' hearts. From the joyous Disney Christmas Parade, to the dazzling Disney Illuminations, each performance added a touch of holiday magic to our Disneyland adventure.

Barbie Comes to Cornwallis

Excitement filled the air at Cornwallis Academy as the renowned dancer, Josie Pocock, graced our halls with her presence, bringing a burst of energy and inspiration to our students through a captivating dance workshop!

Josie has been a professional Dancer for over 10 years, working on many movies, TV shows and music tours. Josie’s credits include The Barbie Movie, Matilda the Movie, Brit Awards, Take That, Cheryl Cole, JLS, X Factor and much more.

The workshop, held on Tuesday, proved to be an extraordinary opportunity for our budding dancers to learn from a true maestro in the world of dance. Josie's expertise and passion for the art form shone through as she guided our students through a dynamic and interactive session, sharing valuable insights and techniques that left a lasting impact on all participants.

Year 7 Bulletin

During term 2, the Year 7 team have been extremely proud of how the year group have seemingly blended into school life at Cornwallis Academy. Lessons are focused and children in the year group have been thriving in their learning and showing their achievement through ePraise points and individual rewards.

It has been a very busy term.  In MFL, students have been enjoying 2 languages but have now chosen to focus on one, starting in January. We have placed children into sets for Maths and English to help ensure the content is aimed correctly for their abilities. Science sets will also begin from the start of next term.

I want to formally congratulate a number of our Year 7 cohort. During their English lessons, the year group created poetry pieces which were entered into a young writers’ competition, to celebrate national poetry week.  27 students were chosen and their work will be published in a book. Congratulations to the following students, I am very proud.

The school ran another outstanding drama performance this year, which was shown to students in the school and performances were shown to the public in the evenings. This year it was ‘Oliver’ and was a complete success. I am very delighted that some of our Year 7 students were in the cast. They worked very hard and had some very late nights during the rehearsals and the final shows.  Well done to the following students who were involved.

In the rewards assembly, which will take place on the last day of term, I will have the opportunity to say well done to many students. It was hard to select the children as there are so many of the cohort that are impressing us, but please see below some who have consistently shown the Cornwallis SMILE.

As I write this to you, we are planning a week of Christmas activities, including our very own Cornwallis Wonderland. Students will have time this week to spend with their new friends, enjoy a Christmas lunch, spend some time on the wonderland rides, wear their Christmas jumpers and be part of the year 7 rewards assembly.

Over the festive break, I hope that you and your children have time to spend with your loved ones and that you all enjoy the rest after an incredibly busy first two terms. I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and New year and thank you once again for your continued support.

Year 8 Bulletin

As we approach the end of term 2 and prepare for 2024, I wanted to say how impressed I have been by the dedication and hard work that our Year 8s have demonstrated throughout these past two terms. It has been fantastic to see them all grow and demonstrate a willingness to learn when I have conducted my learning walks.

During this term there has been some notable achievements for some of our Year 8s. Firstly, to Dillon Masters and Lexi Chance for their outstanding efforts in Art, as their work has been selected for the Maidstone Young Artist Award. This is a fantastic achievement and reflects their hard work and dedication towards their subject – a huge well done. Secondly, to the following students who entered a poetry competition to celebrate World Poetry Day. These students have been selected for an original piece of creative writing, that has been selected for publication in a young writers’ anthology. Well done to:

As we look forward to the remainder of the academic year, I am confident that the skills and knowledge gained in the first two terms will provide a solid foundation for even greater successes ahead. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or if there's anything specific you'd like to discuss regarding your child's progress.

Finally, I would like to inform you of one change to our tutor team for when we return in the new year which is to the form group 8LL. Mr Lewis and Mr Finch will be fulfilling their Head of House duties during form times therefore wont be able to continue as form tutors. I would like to thank both of them for being such fantastic form tutors and I am pleased to announce that the new form tutor is Ms Stafford and will be 8NS in room 7A2 for form time moving forwards.

Please remember that we have our staff inset day on Tuesday 2nd January, therefore we look forward to welcoming all students back on Wednesday 3rd January 2024.

I would like to wish you all a very happy christmas and a happy new year.

Year 10 Bulletin

As we approach the end of another memorable year, I want to take a moment to extend my warmest wishes to each and every one of you. The holiday season is upon us, and it brings with it a spirit of joy, togetherness, and reflection.

This year has been filled with growth, challenges, and countless achievements for our Year 10 students. I am incredibly proud of the dedication and hard work they have shown, both academically and personally. Their resilience has been inspiring, and I have no doubt that they will continue to shine in the years ahead.

As we gather with our loved ones to celebrate this festive season, let's take a moment to appreciate the bonds we share and the support we provide for one another. It's a time to reflect on the achievements and challenges of the past year, and to look forward to the opportunities that the new year will bring.

Congratulations to our wonderful Year 10 awards winners, who have demonstrated the school's SMILE ethos so well in Terms 1 and 2.

This has been a hugely successful start to Year 10 for so many of our students, and they have coped very well with the demands of studying for their GCSE courses. In the new year, we will start discussing with students arrangements for their two-week Work Experience which takes place in Term 6.

On behalf of the Year team, thank you for your continued support and collaboration throughout the year. I am grateful for the strong sense of community that defines our Year 10 cohort, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for each and every one of our students. We wish all our Year 10s a very happy and restful Christmas, and we look forward to seeing all students back at Cornwallis on Wednesday 3rd January.

From Mr Spurling and Miss Perry.

Year 11 Bulletin

Dear parents and carers,

The year 11 cohort continue to conduct themselves in an enthusiastic and energetic manner, which has contributed to many of our students making fantastic progress in their subjects. It has been an extremely challenging term, but Miss Edwards and I could not be prouder of how resilient they have been. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you, for your overwhelming support towards the school, this is greatly appreciated and has such a positive impact in school.

PPE Series

The greatest challenge for the cohort this academic year was the recent PPE series. I would like to commend our Year 11 students for their application, conduct and maturity. It is hoped these allowed students to ease any anxieties or concerns they had regarding examinations, enabling them to feel more comfortable for their GCSEs. Upon reflection, I would like to reinforce a couple of messages to ensure all students are best prepared for their learning and future assessments. Firstly, equipment is vital, and students should be attending school with a sufficient amount of stationery in their pencil case and bag. In addition, they need to have their own scientific calculator so they can familiarise themselves with it. Secondly, the importance of attending extra-curricular sessions. We have an extra-curricular timetable specifically for Year 11 students and we want as many of them as possible to access these sessions to further develop their knowledge and understanding. The benefits this has in the classroom is huge, and will contribute to further progress in their grades.

Kent Choices

The students were delivered an assembly recently informing them of Kent Choices (https://www.kentprospectus.co.uk/) , which is a platform a lot of apprenticeships, colleges, and school’s access. This enables the application process for their post 16 education to be far easier. Students should have received their login details, if they have not then please make the year team aware. We fully appreciate the challenges post 16 choices have on our learners, so we have provided a meeting for all students to discuss their options. This has been hugely beneficial to students, allowing them to acknowledge what they need to do, in order to gain a place on their chosen course. If they have yet to meet with our Career Advisor, Mrs McIntyre, they will have the opportunity in term 3.

Sixth Form Bulletin

It feels like only a short time has passed since I last wrote to you. Our year 12 students have now completed one third of the academic year and our year 13 students' focus is now on their forthcoming exams and next steps.

Our year 12 cohort is now fully immersed in Sixth Form life and those that have joined us from other schools have settled in extremely well.  This is in part, due to the welcoming nature our "homegrown" students show. Changing schools at sixteen is daunting but the willingness of the students to extend a warm welcome makes the transition seamless. We continue to grow as a sixth form, and students play a part in the continued development of our community.

This term has again been busy with many of our students taking part in the school production of Oliver!  Those that were fortunate enough to watch one of the performances, commented on how wonderful the students were and I’m immensely proud of them all.

We have also held our Sixth Form Open evening this term and a huge thank you to all of the students who stayed to help and support their teachers.  A special mention must go to our Senior Team -  Ben, Shreya and Christine who fulfilled their duties with aplomb.

Year 13 and some year 12 PPEs have taken place and I'd like to congratulate all students who have sat exams this term. They are an invaluable tool for class teachers and the students themselves, to identify areas of secure knowledge, as well as those that may need revising, not to mention preparation for the actual exams themselves.

This term, we have changed our approach to our termly rewards and staff were asked to nominate students who have shown hard work, dedication, resilience and the true Cornwallis spirit. We were delighted to receive over 80 nominations with some truly inspiring reasons. Names were put into a bag and ten year 12 and ten year 13 students were picked at random. All were invited to bring a plus one and a thoroughly enjoyable but chilly, game of adventure golf was played up at Bluewater with the rest of the day given to Christmas shopping or the chance to participate in some of the seasonal events that were running.  Those that remained in school were still able to enjoy our annual Christmas Jumper Day, not to mention Wallis Wonderland where a good time was had by all. Both events were a wonderful way to draw the term to a close and I look forward to our next reward event - hopefully the weather will be a little warmer!

For those that are considering an application to university, the deadline of 18.00 hrs on 31st January will come around quickly.  I would urge all students who have not yet finalised their applications, to spend some time over the Christmas break getting everything ready so that we can get these sent ahead of the deadline day. Applications can still be submitted after 31st January, however universities are not obliged to give late applications "equal consideration".

For those that are planning alternative routes, especially apprenticeships again; I would urge students to spend some time putting together their applications. The apprenticeship market is extremely competitive and many application windows are open now for Summer 2024 start dates.

If your child is unsure of their plans, as many are, I would urge them to book an appointment with Ms McIntyre our Careers Counsellor who will be happy to offer guidance and advice on future pathways.

Our year 12 students are also beginning to think about their options and again.  If any guidance is needed, please encourage them to make an appointment or pop into the Sixth Form office for an informal conversation.

A reminder for all, our next parents' evening takes place on Wednesday 7th February.  Full details of the evening will be sent to you nearer to the time.

I'd like to sign of with a couple of reminders. If your child is unwell, please report their absence each day via the main school telephone number. Similarly if they have an unavoidable medical appointment, if you could let us know we can make a note on registers.  Your support with this is greatly appreciated.

All that remains is for me to thank you for your continued support and to wish you all a peaceful and restful break.

I look forward to continuing the journey through 2024 with you.

Kind regards

Mrs Woollett, Head of Sixth Form
