Dear parents/carers,
The fast pace of Term 3 quickly replaced the over-indulgence of the festive break, as the school soon settled into a busy six weeks. Firstly, the data collected from our exam year groups in years 11 and 13 (having sat PPEs in term 2) was scrutinised closely and shared with Heads of Department and class teachers to be forensically analysed for areas of strength and weakness, and where further intervention can be made to improve students’ results in the summer. I’m delighted to say the projected outcomes for both year groups is looking very strong indeed, and I hope students and parents/carers enjoyed individual successes highlighted in their reports. The after-school and lunchtime intervention system for revision sessions is more popular than ever before. Year 11 attendance in terms 1 & 2 alone surpassed the overall attendance for the whole of last year: to date, an additional 800+ hours of learning has been completed. Thank you to the staff for giving their time to run them; the students for attending them, and parents and carers for supporting the initiative.
This term has also been punctuated by a variety of extra-curricular trips and visits including Canterbury Cathedral, The University of Kent, our inaugural foray into the Kent Swimming Championships (thank you Mrs Watts for organising), the Guardian Newspaper and the big one to complete the term: the Sixth Form visit to New York. These experiences support the holistic development of our young people; improves their life skills and helps accrue cultural capital providing the necessary complement to their academic journey with us. Again, these would not be possible without the dedication of our staff and the support of parents and carers.
Our Sixth Form Taster Day was a resounding success and saw students from Cornwallis and NLL experience a ‘day in the life’ of a sixth form student, accessing subjects they hope to pursue at key stage 5. As always, Mrs Robinson, Mrs Woollett, Ms McIntyre and the Sixth Form team, did a fantastic job of facilitating such an important day in the school’s calendar. I must extend our thanks and gratitude to colleagues at NLL, and in particular Mr Jones (Head of Year 11) for ensuring a seamless transition for his New Line Learning students.
Finally, after the prolonged closure of our 3G pitch, I’m delighted to announce it reopened for school use, as well as the youth footballing community. I would like to thank all our stakeholders for your patience and unwavering support with this: the right outcome was finally achieved.
Mr Sutton, Head of School

On Friday the 7th February our current Year 11s and 30 New Line Learning Year 11s spent the day as sixth formers.
They had the opportunity to ‘taste’ some of our A Level and BTEC subjects as well as experience the delights of Café Wallis.
The students were thoroughly engaged in their sessions and enjoyed learning all about subjects such as Psychology, Criminology, Sociology and Politics, to name but a few. We also ran sessions for other routes such as employability and talks on careers in the Army and NHS and had representatives from Mid-Kent College. All of our guests commented on how enthusiastic and responsive the students were. The students all had an informative day and we look forward to seeing many of them for our induction days in June.
Over 50 Year 9s visited the University of Kent. They took part in a variety of workshops and learned about University life. All involved had a great day and were praised for their exemplary conduct! Thank you to the Ambassadors who facilitated the tours and our staff for such a wonderful experience.
YEAR 7 TRIP TO CANTERBURY
On Wednesday 8th January, our Year 7 students set off on an exciting trip to Canterbury, exploring its rich history and significance.
Throughout the day, students took part in a carousel of activities in their groups, making the most of everything Canterbury has to offer. One activity was a guided tour of Canterbury Cathedral, where students were able to see first-hand the stunning stained-glass windows and intricate architecture. They learned about the Cathedral’s importance to Christians and its role in British history, from the days of Thomas Becket to modern times.
Another activity saw students taken on a historical walking tour of Canterbury High Street by their history teachers, who pointed out key landmarks and explained how the city has changed over time. In their third activity, students conducted a geography survey, collecting data to support their learning and gaining a real-world understanding of their studies.
The students had a fantastic time, showing great enthusiasm and curiosity throughout the day. They asked thoughtful questions, engaged brilliantly with each activity, and were a credit to the school. A huge well done to Year 7 for making this a memorable and successful trip!
Year 10 students commemorated Holocaust memorial day (Monday 27th January 2025) by hearing from a family member of Holocaust survivors during a special guest speaker assembly. Noreen Plen, part of the Generation 2 Generation organisation, led the session that explored the underlying reasons for the Holocaust, its impact on the country of Poland and on individuals and families.
Noreen’s own parents had been victims of both Nazi and Soviet oppression during the Second World War, having seen their own country invaded and conquered. However, students were also informed of the destruction to Noreen’s wider family during the persecution of the Jewish people. Finally, Noreen’s message was one of hope and a consideration for a better future, in particular noting that generations of her family live on to be able to tell of the horrors of events that occurred during the Holocaust. Students were encouraged to consider the importance of education and in particular ensuring people understand the way in which hate can lead to horrendous moments in human history.
The students were impeccable in their focus during the session which incorporated the themes of genocide, war and grief, showing respect to Noreen as our guest speaker and to the commemoration of the Holocaust.
LEADING THE WAY IN TEACHER TRAINING
Cornwallis Academy is fast becoming the place to train to become a teacher, across a range of subjects. Last year, we were selected to be a Hub Training school, working in collaboration with the TES Institute and the popular training provider, Teach in Kent. This means we host regular training days where 25-30 trainee teachers from across Medway and the Maidstone area come to Cornwallis Academy to develop their understanding of pedagogy (methods of teaching). This involves the trainees visiting a number of lessons whilst observing our wonderful students working hard across a variety of subjects – feedback about the young people in our school is always glowing and is a real reflection of the skill and dedication of our teaching and support staff.
In addition to inviting trainee teachers to Cornwallis Academy, we regularly host recruitment events, specifically for people who may be interested in pursuing a career in teaching, either at secondary or primary level. Our most recent event took place on Monday 27th February and was very well attended. If you, or anyone you know, is considering a career in teaching please visit www.futureschoolstrust.com and click on the ‘Routes into Teaching’ page. Alternatively, you can visit the website of our training partner, Teach in Kent, where you can watch videos featuring our current trainees and gain valuable information about different ways to train and qualify.
GUARDIAN LONDON TRIP
Year 11 and 12 Media students enjoyed a trip to The Guardian offices in London. Students completed an opinion writing workshop in which they planned, created then edited their own opinion pieces.
Each student began by exploring current news reports, then they considered their opinions on a prominent news article, ranging from The Grammys to children’s mental health. Each student researched their topic and formulated a strong and unique opinion. Then they started writing their article, receiving expert advice on the structuring and content of an opinion piece. They had time to explore the editing process before sourcing images and formatting their article. Each student returned with an increased understanding of the writing and editing process, a printed copy of their very own opinion article and an excellent experience in a dynamic office environment.
On Thursday 9th January, our Year 12 Spanish students attended a Languages Conference Day at the University of Kent in Canterbury. It was a very insightful and interesting day with lectures about the importance of languages, study pathways and career prospects as well as sessions about culture and history in Spanish speaking countries.
Aim A Little Higher have been to Cornwallis Academy every Friday of this term. Sixty Year 10 students have been taking part in their My Student Brand intervention which focuses pupil resilience, the reality of budgeting, and working on a career goal that suits your character.
So far, students have looked into their positive personal traits, and possible barriers to success, and then looking into budgeting a £23,000 salary across a year, including taxes, bills, and hobbies. Students have gained an awareness of what their real lives could look like once they start a full time job, and the salary they will need for the life they wish to lead.
They will be moving on to making the 25th Birthday wishes for their career, finance, and family lifestyle. They will make a plan to overcome barriers to making this wish a reality. And lastly, students are given a script on how to gain work experience in key areas of interest to them.
At Cornwallis Academy, we entered the Young Writers' poetry competition titled ‘The Beautiful Truth’. Students carefully crafted poems about themselves and submitted them to the panel. Over 90 of our students are now published authors, which is an amazing achievement for both them and the school.
We are incredibly proud of them all and look forward to entering further writing competitions.
Huge congratulations to Cadence (Y7), Andris (Y7) , Noah (Y9), and Ethan (Y9), who represented Cornwallis Academy at the Kent Schools' Swimming Championships, held in Margate on Sunday, 12th January 2025. These talented swimmers put in outstanding performances, achieving personal bests (PBs) in every race they participated in. Their hard work, dedication, and commitment were evident as they raced with determination and skill throughout the day.
Cornwallis was one of 48 schools entered into the championships, making this a highly competitive event, and an exciting milestone for the school. Remarkably, this was the first time Cornwallis had ever entered the championships, marking an important moment in the school’s sporting history. The achievements have set a high standard and paved the way for future participation in this competition.
We are incredibly proud of their efforts and the way they represented the school with such pride and sportsmanship. Well done to all four swimmers for their exceptional performances and for making their mark at this event!
YEAR 7 SPORTING SUCCESS
Well done to Millie C, who after attending trials back in October, was selected to play for the U13 Kent Korfball team. This meant that she played in a recent Inter-Area Korfball competition held in Harrow. This competition included the best U13 players in the country, competing against each other. Although Kent had a young team, they dominated in all their games and came out as winners. Millie also finished the day as one of Kent’s top scorers.
Millie was also selected for Maidstone at the Kent Schools' Cross Country Championships. Despite being nervous, Millie really enjoyed the experience and gave it her all. She ran the course in just over 12 minutes.
A great experience and achievement.
Dear Parents/Carers,
Happy New Year to our Year 7 Community.
Well done to all our Year 7 students, who took part in the Motte and Bailey Castle competition this term. Having seen many of the entries being brought into school this term, both Miss Edwards and myself were in awe at just how much effort had gone into making them (thank you to our parents/carers too, who I am sure helped a little 😉).
They were all incredible but the below students received special recognition from the History Department:

Dear Year 8 families,
It feels like a long time since I wrote to you last, the Christmas holiday celebrations and the new year seems a long time ago, as we are now heading towards the spring term. The children have returned to school this year and have been working really hard in lessons. I have received a number of emails this term from teaching staff in Art, Languages, DT, RE and English praising the year 8 cohort for their outstanding contributions in lessons. Staff have shared with me some really good quality work and it makes me so proud to see such dedication from so many of our students. The children in year 8 recently attended an assembly related to the holocaust. They entered the lecture theatre impeccably and listened intently to the important messages. It made me feel so honoured to be their head of year.
I have recently been checking that the year group are prepared for their school day. I am pleased to report that the vast majority of the year group are continuously bringing their pencil cases, class books, a reading book and wearing the correct uniform. Just as a reminder, all students need a pencil case with pens, pencils, sharpener, rubber, scientific calculator, scissors, glue, colouring pencils. Students must also be wearing a blazer and not wearing jewellery. Thank you to so many of you who support the school by helping your children to prepare for each day.
We have also been having a big push on attendance and timekeeping this term. It is so important that the children in my year group are on time for school and lessons and they only take time off if totally necessary. Attendance and punctuality is important throughout your life not just in school and I want to ensure your children understand the importance of this. Most children are on time for school and for all their lessons, there are so many students in the year group who have 100% attendance. I am continuing to reward a randomly selected student each week for 100% attendance along with my year 8 boy and girl of the week.
This term staff have been asked to select students for awards who have been working above and beyond in different subjects. As I previously said, I am proud of the whole year group for their hard work, but these individuals have excelled, and for this, they have been rewarded.

By the time you read this, I will hopefully have met with most of you at parents’ evening. I hope you found the evening rewarding and you received relevant and useful feedback from your child’s teachers. Your support and encouragement is appreciated by your children and helps to build a good working relationship between home and school, so thank you for attending.
This leaves me with nothing more to say than have a wonderful half term holiday. Congratulations to all of the students who have worked so hard this term, your kindness and dedication has not gone unnoticed. We look forward to seeing you after the half term break on Tuesday the 25th of February, refreshed and ready to learn.
Kind regards,

Dear Year 9 families,
I hope this message finds you well.
This term, our Year 9 students have selected the GCSE option subjects they wish to study for the start of Year 10. All of these choices are currently being finalised and will be confirmed to students by the end of term 4. It has been great to hear students discussing their GCSE options together, and feel excited about the prospect of starting them very soon.
During this term, we have also taken 52 Year 9 students to the University of Kent, an opportunity which we have provided to the year group ever since Year 7. All students participated within a variety of workshops and learned all about University life. There was a selection of ambassadors who led the day and also took students on a campus tour providing them with a flavour of what it was like to be a University student for the day. All students involved were a real credit to the year group and to the school - well done.
This week, all students took part in activities regarding Safer Internet Day, which took place on Tuesday 11th February. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Too good to be true’ which is about protecting yourself and others from scams online. During the activities, students were starting conversations about how to spot, respond to and report scams of all types online. Safer internet day tips for parents and carers can be found on the link below.

Next term there will be one change to our Year 9 tutor team. 9MS will become 9LW meaning that Miss Willetts will be taking over from Ms Sangster as she will be moving to the Year 7 tutor team. I would like to personally thank Ms Sangster for all her hard work with the tutor group and welcome Miss Willetts to the pastoral team.
Finally, I would like to wish all students a lovely and restful half term break and we look forward to welcoming all students back on Tuesday, 25th February 2025.

Dear Year 10 Families,
This term has flown by, with our Year 10 students continuing to work extremely hard on their GCSE studies. They have been committed to both their academic studies and extra-curricular activities, learning new skills and demonstrating real maturity.
Over the last six weeks, 60 of our students have been lucky enough to take part in weekly ‘Aim a Little Higher’ workshops, focusing on career goals, the reality of budgeting and building resilience. Students have shown real excitement and enthusiasm for the sessions and engaged well throughout. Additionally, a number of our Year 10’s took part in a ‘Natural Hazards’ online seminar and also commemorated Holocaust memorial Day by attending a talk from a family member of a Holocaust survivor. As always we are extremely proud of the way students conducted themselves, showing real respect at all times.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate students on their improved attendance and punctuality. Punctuality is vital to ensure students take full advantage of teacher input and ensure the learning of others is not disrupted. 10SP were even rewarded with a breakfast for being at the top of the year group leader board for three consecutive weeks.

Have a great and restful half term.
The Year 10 team.
Dear parents/carers,
The Year 11s deserve huge praise for the way in which they have conducted themselves in Term 3. Following on from their mock examinations before Christmas, they have continued to attend revision sessions at lunchtime and after school in great numbers, and this will have a hugely positive impact on them as they approach their final examinations in the summer.
On Friday 7th February, they sampled a taste of what life will be like post 16, with their Sixth Form Taster Day. For some students, this meant attending taster session for A Level subjects. For those who plan to go to college, they received input from various speakers from the National Health Service and the Fire Brigade, amongst others. Their conduct throughout the day was excellent.
On Monday February 10th, students received a 'deep dive' experience from their Humanities subject (either History or Geography), where they focused on examination skills and knowledge recall from Periods 1-4. Their teachers were impressed with their conscientious approach and stamina throughout the morning.
As you will know by now, the Year 11 Prom will be held on Friday 20th June 2025 at the Great Danes Mercure Hotel, Hollingbourne. Full details about this fantastic event can be found in the letter which was emailed to all parents.
Finally, congratulations to all our amazing Subject Reward winners for Term 3. The full list is below:

If you have any queries, please contact either jspurling@cornwallisacademy.com or sperry@cornwallisacademy.com
From Mr Spurling and Miss Perry.
Dear families,
During the penultimate week of term, we held our annual next steps day for our current year 11 students. This an initiative that we introduced three years ago now and is designed to give our students the best possible chance to make informed choices about where they continue their education.
Those that are considering sixth form were invited to spend the day as a year 12 student, undertaking lessons in a range of subject options many of which they have not had the opportunity to study before and to meet the staff who will be teaching them next year.
As in previous years, our most popular courses were Psychology and Criminology, but Biology also proved to be very popular. We were delighted to welcome 30 students from New Line Learning to spend the day with us and I hope that all had a great experience.
Students who have applied for college and apprenticeship places were given the chance to hear from a number of guest speakers ranging from the Army, the NHS, The Education People and Mid Kent College. Each session was delivered to inform and advise students about options that are open to them and to open their minds to roles that are available within each of the sectors.
Due to unprecedented demand, we have extended our application for a place in year 12 to the end of February. If you child would like to be considered but has yet to apply, please encourage them to do so as soon as they can.
Mrs J Woollett, Head of Key Stage 5
