Duane Eddy is not only a guitar legend and a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but he was very proud to be born in Corning, New York. (b. 1938 - d. 2024)
Duane Eddy was born on April 28, 1938, in Corning Hospital (when it was at 1st and Chemung), and lived on East 2nd Street near Denison Park for his first five years.
His parents were newly married and made their first home here in Corning. His father was Lloyd Eddy from nearby Towanda, PA and his mother, Alberta Granger, was from Waverly, NY. He had family in Elmira, Horseheads, and Burdett. He still has family in Towanda.
His father drove a delivery truck for CoBakCo, a Corning bakery known for its delicious bread, which was located where the Dunkin’ is today. His family moved to Bath where he spent his elementary school years and he gave his first musical performance at a 4th grade assembly.
His parents bought a grocery store near Keuka Lake, 2 miles west of Penn Yan. That's where he spent his junior high years, and is credited with creating their mascot, the Mustangs, during a school drawing contest.
Notably, Duane also gave his first on-air radio performance in Hornell playing “The Missouri Waltz” on his guitar teacher’s Saturday afternoon radio show.
His family moved to Arizona to escape the cold weather when he was 13 where he attended high school and started a band, then met the formidable DJ Lee Hazlewood who encouraged him to write his own music. As a result, he created his "twangy" sound by playing amped-up melody on the lower strings, putting the electric guitar center stage, and the rest is rock & roll history.
Duane Eddy passed away in 2024 in Franklin, TN at age 86.
