Smorgasbord for your Fingerboard

What is it?An e-book in level-order of pieces for solo cello by a diverse roster of composers.
What is the need for it?

There are only a certain selection of books collecting cello music in order from least advanced to advanced, and these books very rarely have composers that are from many different backgrounds represented in the books.

Impact?

This book will be convenient as well due to its online accessibility and suggested donation rather than strict price. Some of the proceeds from the suggested donation will go towards the Friends of Music organization brings ensembles from NYC into the greater Hudson Valley at no cost to public schools.

Goal:

With this book I aim to make it easier for teachers and students to have pieces in level-order that are written by a diverse roster of composers.

Expected outcomes for teachers:

For teachers, the outcome would be that they are able to use this book with their students. It would be an easily accessible, inexpensive, and convenient resource for teachers to use in their lessons along with other pieces for solo cello. It would help them be more representative of different cultures, genders, and backgrounds in their teaching.

Expected outcomes for students:

For students, the outcome would be that they have an easily accessible book to learn pieces from that don’t require multiple players/accompaniment, and have the opportunity to feel more represented by the works they are playing. I would also use this book with my own students and hope that my students would feel like they had more of a say in what they play on their instrument and feel more included in their learning path.

Final expected product:

The final product would be an e-book with around 12 pages worth of half-page long to page-long pieces for solo cello. They will all be commissions written specifically for this book.  Women, non-binary people, BIPOC composers, AAPI composers will be sought after, and less well-known composers as well.
