Community of Practice Shared Resources
We are a group of educators and researchers dedicated to Anti-Racist and Culturally Relevant Teaching in the Science Classroom. This page acts as a living resource of the tools that we find useful in this work.
Antiracist teaching includes:
Using our perceived influence/privilege to call out immediately and disrupt racism/racist systems within our own classroom/educational community.
Holding conversations with everyone, not of any specific race, about these inequitable systems.
Inspiring and encouraging others to take action after thoughtful reflection (both internally and externally) to implement meaningful changes that will work toward rebuilding liberated educational spaces.
Culturally Relevant teaching includes:
Actively noticing, learning and integrating cultural backgrounds (experiences, values, traditions, language, country of origin) of students, local culture, and the culture of science into the classroom
Nurturing student relationships in order to incorporate student identity and input into the learning experiences and environment, helping students to build their confidence and competence.
Reflecting upon and adapting instructional strategies to reach both teacher and student learning goals, making the educational community accessible and inclusive.
Tapping and leveraging students’ funds of knowledge, in order to help them make the connections between science and their daily life experiences.
