COP28 - 8 December 2023
Youth, Children, Education & Skills

Today COP28 will address the topic of, and we will pray about, children and young people.

Young people are more aware of the climate crisis than older generations, and more engaged in responding to it. However, when it comes to decision-making on climate, young people often lack a seat at the table. Despite this it is children and young people are also helping to lead the way in caring for their environment and raising awareness of the impact climate change is having.

Young people have been articulate and powerful in their demands for action. Think of Greta Thunberg and the 'Fridays for Future' weekly student climate strike protests around the world. There is a growing generation of young human rights defenders who are taking the lead in climate litigation to hold governments and business accountable.

“The climate crisis poses an “existential risk” to the health and wellbeing of all children and action to tackle it is needed immediately. Air pollution, extreme weather and unprecedented energy costs ... having a very real and detrimental effect on millions of children” (Dr. Camilla Kingdon)."
