Some information to help direct prayer about the issues being discussed at COP27
As members of a church prayer cell that focuses on Creation Care and the justice issues that accompany it, we wanted to take time to reflect on the discussions taking place at COP27 in Egypt in November 2022. We share the deep concerns of our contemporaries but like many we have often struggled to find time to read more widely to really understand the issues. This is the start of our effort to grow in understanding and we invite you to journey with us.
God intends our care of creation to reflect our love for the creator and we also need to reflect on his heart for justice. Climate change is already hitting people in poverty the hardest. God calls us to love our neighbours and speak up for them.
This home page provides a dashboard to navigate to each of the main issues being covered during COP27. You can return to it from any other page by clicking on Praying for COP27 at the top of the page (or if you're on a phone you might just see the black leaf).
Each issue has its own page and the format is the same for all of them. If you don't have much time, just use the short prayer you find at the top of the relevant page (you can't miss it - it's set against a bright red background).
As you move down each page you'll encounter more detail: a longer prayer, a few excerpts from the Bible that we think are relevant, and then four sections that give more information about the issue. We've relied heavily on the work of others for these information sections, particularly on documents produced by the COP27 organisers. We have tried to attribute appropriately and any mistakes are ours. (Consider this a signposted Google search and cut-and-paste exercise - more information here). Note that links to external websites will open in a new tab.
Praying is important, but so is taking action, so we invite you to make some life changes, even if they're just for the two weeks of COP27. Prehaps have one meat-free meal or opt to use a different form of transport instead of a car (if you have one). Or turn your thermostat down by 1 degree. And if you'd like to give, we've created a springboard to the giving pages of six UK charities that are active in some of the areas considered in this web resource.
