About

Hi, I'm Cooper.

My PhD research used machine learning techniques to extract subtle signals from neural datasets and explore the mechanisms of conscious awareness. Through the process of publishing this work, often in high impact journals, I realised that the scientific publishing system is highly inefficient and promotes suboptimal research practices. Rather than competing with friends and colleagues to 'play the game' from within, I decided I would rather step outside the system and try to change it from the outside.

My first foray into this work is the development of Project Free Our Knowledge, which aims to overcome the collective action problem in academia by getting researchers to pledge to adopt progressive research behaviours (e.g., publishing open access) if and when a critical mass of their peers take the same pledge. You can stay informed about the project by joining our mailing list here.
