Cooper Mountain STEAM Fair

Getting Started

The Cooper Mountain STEAM Fair is going virtual this year! To get started all you need to do is complete this entry form by 3/5/2021. This year, in addition to traditional STEAM Fair projects, we are offering a "Maker-Faire" option for those budding artists and engineers among you. You can work with a partner or in a small group: you will need to enter the name of your partners during final project submission.

Traditional Project Information

Steps for a traditional STEAM Fair project*:

  1. To get started, watch the videos above:

  2. Pick a topic. Pick something you are interested in, something you'd like to think about and know more about.

  3. Then do some research on the topic. You can search epic, check out a book from the library, or, with a grown-up's permission, search the internet.

  4. Decide whether you can state a hypothesis (a question or statement that can be tested by an experiment) and follow the scientific method, or whether you will observe something, take and record measurements, and report your findings. Chat about your project with a grown-up to make sure you have their permission and they help you stay safe as you experiment.

  5. Design and carry out your research or experiment, keeping careful records of everything you do or see and your results or observations. Take lots of photos if you can and try to measure your results if possible.

  6. Put together a webpage or slide show on what you hoped to test (if you had a hypothesis) or what question you wanted to answer, what you did, what your data showed, and your conclusions. More information on how to put together your final project is below.

Maker-Faire Information

  1. Think about what you would want to build, how you will build it, what items you will need, and where you are going to build it.

  2. Tell a grownup your plans and make sure you have their permission - they may also have great ideas to help. Writing down your plans may help so you don't forget anything!

  3. Collect the materials and start building! Take lots of photos and notes along the way for your website or Google Slides presentation.

  4. Keep adding on to your build - try different ideas out to see what works, what you like and what you don't like.

  5. Put together a webpage or slide show of your project showing us what your project looked like at the beginning, middle, and end of your build. Tell us what you learned and what you would do differently next time. More information on how to put together your final project is below.

Some ideas for builds:

  • You can build something from paper, Legos, egg cartons, plastic containers, old clothing, cardboard boxes, anything you have that you don't need anymore.

  • You can use a kit to start you off.

  • You can build anything you want: a fort, a bridge, an obstacle course, a game - use your imagination!

  • You can even build a project or game online using code.org or Scratch (use Clever to login)
