About the Author

Alan a. Cook

I proudly served as a Georgia prosecutor for over 13 years - ten as the elected District Attorney for the Alcovy Judicial Circuit. I later joined the faculty at the University of Georgia School of Law where I was the Director of the Prosecutorial Justice Program for 18 years. In that capacity, I trained 100s of law students in the art and science of criminal prosecution before retiring at the rank of Clinical Professor of Law in 2019.

Cook's Field Guide is the capstone of my over 30 years of practical prosecution experience, classroom teaching, legal research, and intense study. I wrote it with practitioners (not academics) in mind.

I am confident that you will find Cook's Field Guide to be the most comprehensive and usable prosecutor training and practice manual on the market.

A Prosecutor's Story - Truth, Honor, and Justice are More Than Just Words (BookBaby, 2020)

This is my personal story as a Georgia prosecutor and reluctant politician. In A Prosecutor's Story, I write about my experiences as a fledgling assistant district attorney in Walton County, Georgia, and my unexpected election to the office of District Attorney at the age of 31. I describe some of my most memorable trials - including death penalty cases, child abuse cases, and politically-sensitive cases. I also share several humorous stories about ridiculous crimes and the crazy defendants who committed them.

CMBrief - A Comprehensive Trial Brief for Prosecuting Child Sexual Abuse Cases in Georgia

I was a Special Victims Prosecutor for most of my prosecutor career. I tried 34 child molestation jury trials. And for 17 years, I served on the faculty of ChildFirst - Georgia (a 5-day training course for forensic child interviewers). As a young ADA, I created a trial brief that I would provide the judge before each child molestation trial. Upon my transition to academia, I expanded the breadth of my Trial Brief (now over 300 pages) and to this day provide it to Georgia SVU prosecutors free of charge.
