Below you will find information about the curriculum we will be using this year, our classroom policies and expectations, and ways you can support your student at home. Working together, we can help students build confidence, develop important skills, and have a successful school year. I look forward to partnering with you and your family to support your student's learning and growth throughout the year!
Guide to 6th Grade Math
Classroom Policies
During the first week of school, students will play an active role in helping establish the expectations for our classroom. We will discuss what a successful learning environment looks like and identify the behaviors and routines that will help everyone feel safe, respected, and ready to learn. Giving students a voice in creating our classroom community helps build ownership and accountability from the very beginning.
Students will also complete a Get-to-Know-You Survey so I can learn more about their interests, strengths, learning preferences, and any supports that help them be successful. This information allows me to better meet the needs of each student and create meaningful learning experiences.
Throughout the year, I will continue to listen to student feedback and reflect on our classroom practices. My goal is to create a learning environment where every student feels valued, challenged, and supported while developing both confidence and a love of learning.
Late Work Policy
Maximum Time to turn in NHI (Not Handed In) school-wide: 7 school days from the assignment due date. After 7 days the NHI will be recorded in the gradebook as a 50. A teacher MAY extend the late work acceptance deadline, but not reduce it.
Student Absences:
3 days or less: 7 days to make up work without penalty from the date of return. After 7 days, work will not be accepted for a grade. 50 will be documented as final grade.
4-7 days: 10 school days to make up work without penalty from the date of return. After 10 days, work will not be accepted for a grade. 50 will be documented as final grade.
+7 days: Students with documented extended illness will be handled on a case-by-case basis with guidance from administration.
Friday Raffle!
Each day, students will have opportunities to earn raffle tickets by participating in class, demonstrating positive character and stewardship, showing leadership, staying engaged, and making responsible choices. Raffle tickets will be entered into Friday drawings for prizes.
In addition, I enjoy recognizing students who go above and beyond by rewarding them with an automatic trip to the prize cart. Prize cart items may include snacks, fidget toys, keychains, stickers, candy, and classroom privileges such as a "Pick Your Seat" pass. These incentives are designed to celebrate positive behavior, effort, and contributions to our classroom community.
Each period has its own ticket color:
2nd yellow
3rd red
4th blue
5th green
Students are responsible for keeping track of their tickets. Lost tickets will not be replaced!!
How to Support Your Student's Success at Home
Please encourage your student to complete all homework assignments and study guides. If they have questions or are struggling with a concept, have them write down their questions so we can address them in class the following day. I also encourage students to attempt every problem to the best of their ability, even if they are unsure of the answer. Seeing their thought process helps me identify misconceptions and provide the support they need to be successful.
Students will use McGraw Hill to complete practice assignments that align with the content we are learning in class. These assignments provide an opportunity for students to review skills, strengthen their understanding, and receive additional practice before completing graded assignments.
Students have access to ALEKS, an adaptive math program that provides personalized practice based on each student's current skill level. ALEKS is a great way to strengthen foundational math skills, reinforce concepts, and challenge students who are ready to extend their learning. While the practice may not always match what we are currently studying in class, it helps build confidence, close learning gaps, and develop the skills needed for long-term success in math.
