Saying "hello" and "goodbye" to people is important because it lets them know that we understand social rules and it's ok to talk to us. If we don't greet people they may think we don't like them or that it's not ok to talk to us.
When we say "Hello" or "Goodbye" to someone:
• Make eye contact. If it's too hard to look the person in the eye look at their eyelashes.
• Stand at least an arms length away
• Use a nice tone of voice (listen to others and adjust your volume and tone to match)
With authority figures like teachers, bosses, and pastors use formal language like, "Hello," "Goodbye," or "Good Morning,". You can add "How are you today?" to start a conversation.
With peers and family use informal language like, "Hi", "What's up?", "See you later," or "Bye."
When you walk by someone you know in the hallway but don't have time to talk you can say "Hi" or just look at them and nod one time.
