LEAR MORE NOTICE:
Drought is affecting major global shipping routes like the Panama Canal. Low water levels have forced reduced ship transit, creating backlogs and delays.
Shipping giant Maersk indicates that due to restrictions in Panama, it is loading 2,000 fewer containers per vessel. Normally ships could draft up to 50 feet, but now must be limited to 44 feet, carrying less cargo.
El Niño is expected to worsen the situation in 2024, marking record global temperatures. Extreme weather events like droughts increase the risk of disruptions on critical routes like Suez and Panama.
The fragility of maritime logistics chains in the face of weather phenomena is a serious threat. Do you consider governments and the shipping sector are doing enough to adapt to and mitigate these climate risks?
