On October 4, 2023, President Minouche Shafik was inaugurated as Columbia University’s newest president and a delegation of 11 non-tenure track faculty representing 230 signatories from across 13 schools of Columbia University were there to present an open letter.
Following this action, an op-ed was published in the Columbia Daily Spectator.
Below are some surprising results from a survey of contingent faculty on wage and working conditions.
Per-course rates for adjuncts at Columbia range from $3,500 to $40,000.
Certain schools have pay differentials that mirror those of the University at large: in SIPA, per-course rates range from $4,000 to $40,000 and in Journalism, from $6,000 to $20,000.
Across all schools, almost half of adjuncts earn less than $9,000 per course.
Some NTT faculty reported extra income for administrative work.
