The Self and Personality

Advancing Theory on the 'me', 'myself' and 'I' of the Consumer in Contemporary Contexts

Following the success of previous events, the Academy of Marketing Consumer Psychology and Cross-Cultural Research SIG is holding its 3rd Workshop on Friday 7th September 2018. The workshop will take place at Kings College London. The workshop aims to foster a network amongst academics, PhD researchers and practitioners in the area of consumer research within the UK and abroad.

The theme of the workshop is on 'The Self and Personality - Advancing Theory on the 'me', 'myself' and 'I' of the Consumer in Contemporary Contexts'.

We invite papers on [but not limited to] the following topics:

  • Self-identity and self-concept and their impact on individuals in modern consumption contexts
  • Variety, novelty and sensation seeking and consumer behaviour across cultures
  • Need for cognition/emotion in consumption and behaviours across cultures
  • Consumer innovativeness and opinion leadership
  • Personality traits and their role in cross-cultural and cross-national consumer behaviour
  • New technological environments and the interaction with the self and/or personality
  • Advances in understanding the self and personality in relation to health and wellbeing
  • State versus trait studies in marketing communications
  • Replication studies showing application of self and personality theories in new contexts

Meet the Editors Session

The workshop will also include a 'Meet the Editors' session. Presenters and attendees will have the opportunity to meet members of the editorial teams from the European Journal of Marketing, International Marketing Review, and the Journal of Consumer Behaviour.

Submission Guidelines

Short papers should be submitted to Dr Nikoletta Theofania Siamagka (nikoletta.siamagka@kcl.ac.uk) via email by July 13th 2018 at 5pm. The format for papers is as follows:

  • 3 single-spaced pages (excluding title page, abstract, references, tables, figures and appendix) with size 12 times roman font and normal (1” all round) margins.
  • The title page should include the title of the paper, the author(s) contact details as well as a short abstract of no more than 100 words.
  • Tables and figures should be provided within the main body of the paper. Only one appendix is allowed.
  • References should be provided in any style but be consistent.
  • With the exception of conceptual papers outlining the proposed PhD, papers should contain a background and literature review, method, results and conclusion/future work section.

In order to cover costs a fee of £50 is charged for workshop participation. You do not have to present your research and can just come along to network with other researchers. You do not have to be a current member of the Academy of Marketing to participate, although we would encourage you to join. The fee will include refreshments and lunch on the day of the workshop only.
