To provide students and staff at the University of Texas at Arlington with practical training and hands-on experience in drone operation and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) technology.
To contribute to the Federal Aviation Administration’s efforts in expanding the future aviation workforce by offering valuable opportunities and experiences for students and staff.
The 2018 Reauthorization Act of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) required the FAA to establish a collegiate training initiative program relating to unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), better known as drones. The Unmanned Aircraft Systems Collegiate Training Initiative (UAS-CTI) Program was launched in April 2020 and addresses the Section 631 requirement of the FAA 2018 Reauthorization Act.
On June 25, 2024, the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) became an FAA's UAS-CTI Program member. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by the UTA Provost and FAA Executive Director of the UAS Integration Office.
As a member, the Department of Civil Engineering at UTA will offer a curriculum course, CE/AREN 4334 Drones and Advanced Construction Technology, and drone flying sessions to UTA students and staff at Construction Drone Club.
What Does Construction Drone Club Do
UTA students and staff have opportunities to fly drones and get hands-on experience for recreational purposes under the supervision of Remote-Pilot-in-Command (RPIC).
Students and staff at UTA could participate in virtual sessions and get experience in drone operation simulation using VR goggles and controllers.
The workshop provides UTA students and staff opportunities to learn cutting-edge technologies for drone applications. It focuses on both commercial and recreational drone applications.
The workshop helps attendees prepare for the FAA's Part 107 Exam to obtain Remote Pilot Licenses. This workshop is currently only available to IPP (Industrial Partnership Program) Members of UTA's Department of Civil Engineering.
The Club is located at Nedderman Hall NH 243. The operation hours (except public holidays) are between 10 AM and 5 PM (Monday to Friday) in the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. In-person visits and inquiries are always welcome.
Students and staff at UTA can find the Flying Session Sheet at the entrance of the Construction Drone Club. Basic information is required to sign up and fly in the session.
