Curating Book Joy in the Time of Quarantine:

A School Library’s Response to COVID-19

For students, parents, and teachers alike, the 2020-2021 school year has been a source of overwhelming challenges. Many students still lack access to the meaningful services offered by both school and public libraries.

The objective of this project is to provide literature-based experiences for students and their families through the curation of four COVID-safe school library events at Barbara Jordan Early College Prep School in the Austin Independent School District.

The curation of these 4 events was instrumental in strengthing the school to home connection at a time of great uncertainty. With the support of Barbara Jordan's dedicated and wonderful teachers and administrators, we read 16 bedtime stories to over 50 sleepy listeners, gave away hundreds of new books, raised over $1,800 dollars for library books & activities, and engaged in meaningful literature-based conversations with parents about the importance of diverse books by diverse authors.
