ACT I: ACTING CONSERVATORY
2:30 PM
Director: Thomas Underdal
Director's Note:
Once upon a time we started with a big pile of fairy tales. They were full of big ideas, wild imaginations, and just enough magic to make us wonder, what if? So we asked ourselves: what if Little Red didn’t follow the path? What if Belle wasn’t waiting to be rescued? What if all these characters met, argued, shared snacks, or maybe even became friends? That’s when the real adventure began.
This show is the result of a group of students diving into these old stories, pulling them apart, and then putting them back together in brand-new ways. We’ve twisted, turned, flipped, and reinvented them adding our own voices, jokes, questions, and surprises along the way. It’s been a creative, chaotic, and totally collaborative process from start to finish. We hope you enjoy this reimagining of a great classic and the unexpected. So sit back, open your imagination wide, and get ready to meet some familiar faces doing very unfamiliar things. We’ve had a blast creating this world and now it’s your turn to explore it.
Fairy tales will never be the same! Enjoy the magic, the mayhem, and the unexpected happily ever afters!

Welcome to The Tales of the Kingdom, four tales that all take place in the same part of a fantasy world. This performance was developed through a Surrealist artist technique called ""Exquisite Corpse"". In this collaborative artmaking, everyone in the circle writes one line at a time but can only see the line directly before theirs. This allows for creative storytelling to emerge and twists and turns to be a natural occurrence. These stories were combined, altered, and twisted to make the four short scenes you will see tonight.
This semester, we focused on character work, specifically in the body, to deepen our understanding of the Actor’s Toolbox. This was emphasized further using masks. These eliminate our facial expressions and force us to use larger than life gestures and movements to tell our stories. You will see the actors wearing masks whenever they are “ensemble” or non-speaking roles.
My dear students, thank you for your constant excitement at our craft, your eagerness to play and create, and your willingness to try new things. I am so proud of each and everyone of you for your contribution to the creation of this semester’s show. Now, take a seat, put on your imagination caps, and enjoy The Tales of the Kingdom.

This showcase is a vignette-style show, meaning we will see three mini plays all revolving around a different waiting room: Purgatory, The DMV, and a Hospital. In Purgatory, we will see a physicality-led piece about two souls who lose each other in the after life. In the DMV, we see a dysfunctional family trying to cope with their son’s driving test. Lastly, in the Hospital, we see three strangers trying to find comfort in each other while awaiting their fate.
This is the first time this class has been able to completely devise their own show with very little/no edits from me. This piece is truly their words and thoughts presented to you, the audience, on stage. I am so proud of what they have accomplished this semester. Break a leg and please enjoy The Waiting Room!

As we bring this year to a close, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable journey we've shared in Acting Level 4 and 5. I've had the honor of working with many of these students for two years now, and witnessing their growth—both as artists and as human beings—has been a deeply moving experience.
When we first began this semester, some students were still hesitant to explore difficult topics like grief, loss, and mortality in their storytelling. But over time, I’ve watched them lean into these themes with increasing courage and maturity. Their willingness to engage with death—not just as an abstract idea, but as a narrative and emotional turning point—marks a profound shift in their development. In The Search for Sunlight, they didn’t just accept that characters might not make it out alive; they insisted that their endings be meaningful.
What started with uncertainty became a process filled with imagination, empathy, and bold choices. Students learned how to project, to collaborate, to devise original scenes, to give and receive feedback, and to support each other as creative partners. These are skills that will serve them far beyond any stage.
This play was also a first for all of us: our very first two-part saga. Watching it come together was nothing short of magical. Our Level 5 students—many of whom joined our ensemble this year—stepped into leadership with passion and grace. They became assistant directors, organizers, idea-generators, and steady hands when focus faltered. Their presence elevated every rehearsal and gave younger students someone to look up to.
Ms. Natalie and I are endlessly proud of this ensemble. We can’t wait to see how our Level 4 students continue to grow next year and what incredible things our graduating Level 5s will do as they leave our Conservatory program behind and step into the world.
Thank you for supporting student theatre, and thank you to the cast for trusting us with your stories.

At an ordinary sleepover, three friends break out a game of Clue—but when a crack of thunder and a magical chime transport them into the game's glamorous (and dangerous) world, the night turns into anything but ordinary! They must survive a high-stakes mystery filled with poisoned chocolates, secret plots, and unexpected songs. Will they outwit the mischievous Detective and escape the Boddy Mansion? Or will they dance and sing their way into disaster? A whirlwind of laughter, suspense, and musical mayhem awaits in this original musical created by the talented students of Musical Theatre Level 1!
This show is the magical result of twelve weeks of imagination, collaboration, and pure creative energy. Together, the students not only performed but also helped build this story from the ground up—crafting characters, shaping scenes, and even choosing the songs. Their commitment to playing, risk-taking, and saying “yes, and!” has been inspiring.
Thank you for supporting our young artists tonight. Get ready for a night of mystery, music, and a whole lot of heart!

The story of High School Mythology follows the life of Helen as she navigates through her first day of her new high school: Mt Olympus High School! Inspired by the Greek myth, Helen of Troy, we meet fellow “gods and goddesses” that help determine the fate of Helen and eventually lead to the Trojan War! (Spoiler- it’s just a fight after the Prom).
Our modern take of this classic myth includes a repertoire of songs, all taking place in a high school. From Mean Girls, to Heathers: Teen Edition, and The Prom, each song helps develop the story and retell it like never before.
Words can’t describe how proud I am of this group of individuals. Each student has played a large part of the success of our show. Whether that be with dramaturgy, sharing ideas for blocking, or helping one another with music, they’ve all worked so hard on this show- and now it’s time to share it with you all! Please enjoy High School Mythology!

All aboard and welcome to Murder on the Orient Express: A New Musical! When the students first invited me to join their production as Michel the Conductor, I had no idea I’d be stepping into such a wildly imaginative, hilarious, and heartfelt journey.
This show is a creative twist on Agatha Christie’s classic mystery—only now it sings, dances, and dazzles! With songs like “Polar Express,” “Roaring On,” “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” and “Cell Block Tango,” the students have transformed suspense into spectacle, and turned the Orient Express into a musical adventure you won’t forget.
Even more exciting—this production is part one of a two-part Agatha Christie double feature. Tonight’s musical mystery is just the beginning. Stay tuned for part two, where the sleuthing continues in an all-new Christie-inspired tale.
I couldn’t be prouder of the hard work, humor, and heart this cast has poured into every scene. Thank you for joining us on this one-of-a-kind ride. Just remember—on this train, no one is exactly who they seem… and everyone has a song to sing.
Enjoy the show!

Ten strangers are summoned to a remote island. All that the guests have in common is a wicked past they're unwilling to reveal and a secret that will seal their fate. For each has been marked for murder. As the weather turns and the group is cut off from the mainland, the bloodbath begins and one by one they are brutally murdered in accordance with the lines of a sinister nursery rhyme.
Welcome to part two of tonight’s Agatha Christie double feature. In addition to their ensemble role, each student took on one or more production roles, bringing their creativity and style in multiple ways. They all took to their roles with gusto, often completing their designs faster than I had expected. I’m incredibly proud of their dedication!

Who are we? What has shaped us? What do we truly wan't-not just as artists, but as people? These are questions that have guided this group of students through their journey, and now, at the culmination of their time in the conservatory program, they return to these reflections with new depth, clarity, and courage. This showcase is more than a performance. It is a full circle moment. For their final semester, the students were given complete ownership of their work: from selecting material to creating movement and directing each piece. Every moment you witness tonight is born from their unique voices, imagination, and most importantly, their personal experiences. Please enjoy this final piece created by Musical Theatre level 5, telling their stories of "what was / what is / and what could be" in "The Tense Of Us"

Ora and Eddie fell in love with Chicago on their bikes. But when Eddie is hit by a car and killed, Ora refuses to let him go. Instead, she rides beneath our city to bring him back, facing off against underworld gods and ghosts – some interested in helping her, some determined to get in her way. Chicago culture skitches off of Greek, African, and Chinese mythology, sparking a spirited mash-up of underworld and after-life as seen from the seats of fixies, BMX’s and ten-speeds.

What's YETi?
Y.E.T.i (Youth Ensemble Theatre Inc.) is a theatre production ensemble created to give high school students the opportunity to take part in the full frontier of theatre. Founded in January of 2015, Y.E.T.i members manage everything from production and marketing, to fundraising and outreach. With the assistance of the resident Childsplay staff, these teens organize and execute all of the tasks of a professional theatre.
Each season (twice a year), ensemble members will work together select a production and then spend the semester creating the production from the ground up. From designing, to marketing, and from performing to casting, this production will truly be in the hands of the teen ensemble.
