Unit 1 Overview
Throughout our first unit, students will be exploring the classic novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. This powerful story not only portrays the struggles of adolescence and identity but also provides rich opportunities to study literary elements that will strengthen our students’ reading and analytical skills.
Focus Skills:

Plot: As we analyze the plot structure, students will track key events—from conflicts between the Greasers and Socs to pivotal turning points in Ponyboy’s journey—and discuss how these events shape both characters and themes.
Main Idea: Students will practice summarizing chapters and identifying main ideas within the text. This will help them recognize the core messages of the novel and build stronger comprehension skills.
Tone and Mood: Through close reading and discussion, students will analyze Hinton’s tone and the shifting moods throughout the novel. We’ll explore how her word choice and style influence readers’ emotions and perspectives.
Figurative Language: Students will identify and interpret the author’s use of figurative language, such as symbolism, similes, and allusions. We’ll consider how these devices bring depth and imagery to the text.
Symbolism: The Outsiders uses meaningful symbols—such as sunsets and hair—that reflect the characters’ struggles and hopes. Students will uncover the significance of these symbols and how they contribute to the novel’s deeper meaning.
