First Families and Early Settlers of Montana

Montana State Genealogical Society

The First Families and Early Settlers Program of the Montana State Genealogical Society is open to anyone who can prove decent (either direct or through a sister or brother of a direct ancestor) from a resident of what is now the State of Montana during a time period listed below:

First Families: arrived in Montana before statehood, Nov. 8, 1889

Early Settlers of Montana: arrived between Nov. 9, 1889 and Dec. 31, 1929

The Society has published a series of four books. They are about to print a fifth volume. The books will soon be available for research at the Conrad Public Library. They are for sale online through the Society.

Each submission requires proof of decent. This can include obituaries, birth, death, and marriage licenses, and other documents. Submissions may include a photo of the ancestor and a maximum 400-word biography of the ancestor. The cost of submission is $10. A certificate will be issued upon acceptance for publication.

Further instructions and the application are available at:

The website includes an index of First Families and Early Settlers already included in the volumes, both alphabetical and by county.
