"Youth Sing" is an extracurricular choral club of approximately 50 high school-aged youth, led by two part-time instructors. The intensive program meets three afternoons a week immediately after school during the school year, and 5 days a week during summer vacation. The program sets high expectations for engagement and self-discipline, and has been successful in building a strong sense of community and commitment. Most youth participate for 3 to 4 years before graduating.
Many of the youth live in a urban environment in households with limited resources. For some of the youth, the club is where they most experience belonging. The recent shelter-in-place order has the instructors concerned that some of the youth may be isolated or unprepared to deal with strains on their health, families, and daily needs. The instructors therefore resolve to each try to stay connected digitally with as many members as possible.
Rather than divide up the contacts among themselves, they opt to track the frequency of contact (by any mode of communication) with each member and review the results weekly to see who has not been reached recently or at all. After uploading the initial club list of members with emails, phone numbers, or other preferred means of communication, they are able to use the sumApp interface to update their connections each week and use the contact info included in the map profiles to reach out accordingly.
The current map shows the most recent connections as the boldest, and which members have been contacted by which instructors. The map indicates that 5* members have yet to be contacted, so the instructors specifically discuss how they might make a connection with them to ensure that they’re ok.

The filter controls at the top of the map allow them to further control the display. By only selecting contacts made since the second week, the identify an additional 6 members who have not been connected with since at least March 28. They prioritize contacting these members in the coming week as well, and to continue reaching out to other members as they are able.
