Premise: the economic and social development of a Nation also depends on the durability of its companies. It can be achieved through balanced economic and financial growth. The study project tends to evaluate the quantitative characteristics of Italian companies in their financial statements to verify compliance with these balance principles and comparison with foreign ones.
General aims: to include students in some phases of a wider research and study project related to the evaluation of the economic and financial performance of Italian public and private companies trying to make a comparison with foreign companies (American and others).
Moreover, Promote international relations and knowledge exchange, and Develop values of mutual tolerance through the comparison of different cultures.
Specific objectives:
a) to teach how to process balance sheet data for the assessment of performance over a decade. The methodology is applicable to other balance sheets, even of foreign companies, considering that the techniques are of a statistical nature.
b) compare the methods used in Italy with similar foreign experiences.
Methodology: use mathematical processing and statistics for performance evaluations. Applications will relate to balance sheet data for at least 10 consecutive years and on a significant sample of companies. Data processing will be carried out with the help of specific software.
Period: a month (January 2020).
Tools: computer, printers, Internet network. Data will be taken from the Aida and Orbis databases of the Bureau van Dick. Only Aida database is available at the University of Sannio. Guest students should verify access to Orbis through other institutions.
Required knowledge and skills: students must know mathematical and statistical methods for data processing. Knowledge of historical series analysis methods and of the main correlation and variance analysis tools is required (for example, ANOVA).
Students must also know and be able to use the main statistical processing software such as, for example, Stata, R., DataMelt, KNIME Analytics Platform, OpenRefine, Orange, Trifacta Wrangler or others. The University of Sannio has only free software.
It is appreciated if guest students have the availability of at least one non-free software, that he/she will use on his/her pc.
