NYC
A Selection of Manhattan, NYC based sewing supply stores shared by Barbara Gordon.
Steinlauf & Stoller Notions,
239 W 39th Street.......interfacings, especially the featherweight fusible tricot. Pattern making supplies, notions. Also they install grommets while you wait, and sharpen scissors INCLUDING PINKING SHEARS!
Butterfly Fabrics,
237 W 35th Street....very nice silks at very reasonable prices, excellent and pleasant service.
Royal Fabrics,
214 W 39th Street...another silk resource but pricing is not great and it is inconsistent (not trustworthy, they will change the price on you based upon what they think you might pay, yet do not negotiate). Service is condescending. That said, they sometimes have certain types and colors not found elsewhere.
Mood Fabric,
225 W 37th street, 3rd and 4th floor (elevator in lobby)
This is a huge store that carries most everything for fashion sewing (silks to fur pelts). No great prices here, very much a retail store. Often very crowded with young fashion students monopolizing staff to cut swatches for them for their "mood boards". That said....tremendous variety and some very knowledgeable sales staff. I have found fabrics and colors here in silks and cotton lawns that I couldn't find anywhere else.
Paron Fabrics,
257 W 39th street
Overall, not a great store, and not a great value. HOWEVER, I have occasionally seen some fabulous woolens here at very low prices.
Grey Line Linens
260 W 39th Street
Linen, linen, linen, and some linen blends. Fabulous cross woven fine fashion linen line that they import. Excellent quality, selection and pricing. Okay service.
Trims, Ribbons, Buttons:
Mostly stores are on 38th street.
Pacific Trimmings
218 W 38th
Ribbons, cords, zippers, buttons, PURSE HANDLES, clips, buckles.
Hyman Handler and Sons Ribbons and Trims
21 W 38th
Old School. Expensive, but unbelievable selection of very special woven ribbons. Some very old stock, long out of production.
Mokuba Ribbons
137 W 38th
Japanese store. Fabulous quality and selection of types and colors. Minimalist aesthetic is to die for. Just step in and breathe the air.... Expensive but rare offerings, especially for lip-cord which is becoming an endangered animal. CLOSED BUT MAYBE AVAILABLE MAIL ORDER. UNSURPASSED QUALITY.
