Update: On March 18th the DOT removed the don't walk signs and said they would evaluate the intersection for an Enhanced Crossing. Thank you DOT!
On March 13, 2026 the New York City Department of Transportation installed Don't Walk signs above the mid-block curb cuts on Congress Street. These cuts are adjacent to Van Voorhees Park on one side and a Citi Bike station on the other. We believe this is dangerous and misguided and that the signs should be removed and replaced with a cross walk.
Read the presentation to understand why these signs are a bad idea, and why improved pedestrian access is particularly important on Congress Street.

Request for Enhanced Crossing at Congress Street and Van Voorhees Park
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to thank the NYC DOT for the recent removal of the "Don’t Walk" signage on Congress Street between Hicks and Columbia.
While this is a positive step, the intersection still lacks a formal crossing. I urge the DOT to prioritize the installation of an enhanced crossing or other pedestrian improvements at this location to complete the safety transition.
The existing accessible curb cuts continue to lead into an unmarked roadway, creating a hazardous environment for pedestrians and cyclists accessing Van Voorhees Park and the nearby Citi Bike station.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration
Sincerely,
