From Tuesday February 22 to Thursday February 24, 2022,

Join us for the annual conference for and by INTRIQ students:

CONFÉTI 2022

In-person event, taking place at Hôtel Château Bromont, in Bromont.

Overview

CONFÉTI (CONFérence ÉTudiante de l'INTRIQ - French for INTRIQ Student Conference) is a yearly student conference sponsored by Institut Transdisciplinaire d'Information Quantique (INTRIQ - French for Transdisciplinary Quantum Information Institute). It attracts graduate students and postdocs in the fields of physics, mathematics, computer science, and engineering working on projects related to quantum computing, quantum information, and quantum mechanics in general.

The main goal of CONFÉTI is to foster communication, discussion, and collaboration between students working in quantum-mechanics-related fields at Université de Sherbrooke, McGill University, Université de Montréal, and Polytechnique Montréal.

Please let us know if you will be attending CONFÉTI 2022 by December 17, 2021.

IMPORTANT - Health measures related to COVID-19

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is mandatory to follow certain health measures so that the event can take place safely.

To participate at CONFÉTI 2022, it is mandatory to have received 2 doses of vaccine against COVID-19. Proof of full vaccination will be required.

The mask or face cover will be required at all times, except for eating and drinking.

Why Participate?

During your studies and future academic or industrial career, your communication skills will play an important role in your success. Come improve these skills with other students! You can practice for your thesis defense, your conference paper, or any other type of presentation in front of students who, just like you, are quantum-hungry!

Simultaneously, you can seize this opportunity to become entangled with other students in various quantum-mechanics-related fields for future collaborations!

Finally, cash prizes will be awarded for the best presentations! The winners will be selected by popular vote.

Presentations Formats

There will be two types of presentations at CONFÉTI 2022:

  • Introduction talks

Length: 20 minutes + 5 minutes for questions.

Goal: To present a pedagogical introduction to a subject (typically related to your research project) to make it interesting and accessible for everyone. Typical subjects requiring an introduction talk include, but are not limited to: superconducting qubits, semiconductor qubits, optical qubits and communication, ion trap qubits, quantum error correction, quantum algorithms.

  • Specialty talks

Length: 10 minutes + 2 minutes for questions.

Goal: After an introduction given by someone else, to give a specialized talk about your research.

When registering for CONFÉTI 2022, you will need to specify if you want to give an introduction talk or a specialty talk, and you will need to submit an abstract for your presentation.

Following registration and abstract submissions, the presentations will be grouped in themes; some people might be asked if they want to change their presentation type (introduction and specialty). An important feature of this conference is that everyone should give a presentation, including interns and people who recently started a M.Sc., Ph.D., or postdoc. If you want to attend without giving a presentation, you need to fill the registration form and provide a justification (e.g. you just started your M.Sc.). If too many abstracts are received, the selection will be based on experience: given that one of the objectives of the conference is to allow people to practice talks, participants with the least amount of experience will be selected in priority.

The suggested language for the presentations is English. However, presentations in French will also be accepted.

Schedule, Program, and Venue

CONFÉTI will be held at Château Bromont, in Bromont.

Presentation Prizes

Thanks to a generous contribution by our partners, we are pleased to announce that $950 in cash prizes will be awarded for some of the best introduction and specialty talks. Recipients of these prizes will be selected by the CONFÉTI 2022 participants by popular vote.

The following prizes will be awarded:

  • The best introduction presentation: $150

  • The best specialty presentation: $150

  • The second-best specialty presentation: $125

  • The third-best specialty presentation: $125

  • (New!) Prompt Quantum Innovation Prize: $200

  • (New!) Anyon Systems Applied Quantum Prize: $200

The criteria for awarding the various prizes are detailed below.

For the best introduction, best specialty, second-best specialty, and third-best specialty.

It is based on the overall appreciation of the presentation (relevance of the topic, clarity of the presentation, quality of the visual presentation, explanations well adapted to the audience, etc.)

For the Prompt Quantum Innovation Prize.

Prompt is rewarding the presentation with the most innovative ideas (novelty and creativity).

For the Anyon Systems Applied Quantum Prize.

Anyon Systems is rewarding the presentation on applied quantum research that shows the highest potential for future impact on quantum technologies.
