Epoxy Flooring Coating

Epoxy floorings are floorings applied with layers of tough, long lasting coating called epoxy. Epoxies are used to produce sparkling, clean and durable flooring.

Also, it is applied to protect paint on the flooring from grease, oil and other substances. However, not all floorings can hold epoxy coating. So, before you apply epoxy on your flooring, you should assess first the condition of your concrete if it produces moisture or not. Flooring that produces moisture usually destroys the ability of the epoxy to bond. Hence, it is not suited for epoxy coating.

Also, you must not apply epoxy coating if your flooring was applied with concrete sealer. On the other hand, if you have a new slab, wait for at least a month for the flooring to be thoroughly dry prior to epoxy application. And, if you have painted floors, the best option for you is to remove the old paint before applying any kind of epoxy. In addition, you should also consider the air temperature in your garage. For optimal epoxy drying, air temperature should be between 60 and 90 degrees with the minimum concrete temperature of 55 degrees F.

The outcome of your epoxy flooring also depends on your planning and pre-work. Pre-work involves oil spot removal, floor cleaning and degreasing, floor etching with mild acid, and floor scrubbing, vacuuming and rinsing. If your floor has no cracks, you can immediately apply the first layer of epoxy. However, if your floor has cracks, it is recommended that you fill the cracks first before applying the first layer of epoxy. The second layer of epoxy is applied the day after.

Another critical decision you should make is the type of epoxy you should use. Epoxy floor coatings are tough resins, which are available into two separate parts. There are three types of epoxy: 100 percent solids, solvent-based and water-based. The first one mentioned on the list is almost pure epoxy. It lacks solvent. Hence, it is easily dried up and is difficult to handle. This kind of epoxy is better left to the experts.

The solvent-based epoxy has 40-60 ratios, that is, 60 percent solid. Experts usually prefer this type of epoxy because it penetrates and adheres well. Also, solvent-based epoxies are available in a different range of colors. However, solvent-based epoxies are too strong and might be hazardous. It is recommended that you use a properly fitted respirator while handling this type of epoxy. Also, your garage should be well ventilated.

Similar to solvent-based epoxy, water-based epoxies typically have 40-60 ratios. The advantage of this type of epoxy is it is not hazardous and it is widely available. Solvent-based and water-based epoxies should be applied in two coats to increase their durability and life span. The price of all epoxies depends on the amount of epoxy in the mixture.

Epoxy floorings are great for your garage floor. It can handle car tracks, oils, grease, chemicals and scraping. So, try having epoxy flooring and you will appreciate its benefits.

Flooring is an important part of interior design. In a factory set up where flooring is subject to a lot of wear and tear, choice of the correct flooring is crucial, since it is a part of the initial investment and is often spread across a large area. One of the most widely used flooring options for this niche is epoxy flooring.

This choice revolves around the facts that epoxy flooring is highly durable, requires minimum maintenance and is environmentally friendly. It is hence the recommended flooring option for both residential buildings and industries. The epoxy floor coatings are usually applied over concrete floors to provide best binding results and aesthetically attractive surfaces.

The term epoxy refers to a form of catalyzed plastic. It is basically a resin and is typically a compound of bisphenol-A and a polyamine. Generally, the polyamines are used to harden the surface or the floor.

A catalytic reaction occurs when the resin and hardener come in contact with each other. They bind to each other and create a chemical crosslink that is high in strength. This binding technology is the reason why epoxies can be recoated in a short period of time.

There are three main types of epoxy for flooring. They are 100% solid epoxy, solvent-based and water-based epoxies. Of these three, 100% solids epoxy is the best choice as it performs the best. Water and solvent based epoxies are considered user friendly, but this type of epoxies was not as durable and cannot be applied as a thick coating like the 100% solids ones.

The solid epoxies capably meet all the stringent requirements that are to be complied when designing an industrial floor. It offers strong adhesion, excellent chemical resistance and toughness. Further, epoxy floors in general are abrasion resistant, waterproof, heat resistant, and resistant to the action of corrosives like acids and alkalis. They are non-toxic when dry and hence, can be used safely even in residential projects and children play areas.

The practical application on a floor surface takes the following steps. The compounds are mixed in a proper ratio and are applied to the floor to a minimum depth of 2 mm. Usually, an epoxy flooring requires at least seven coats to finally create a glossy and finished surface. It includes a base coat, one or two epoxy coats, a broadcast coat of colored sand or flakes and a top coat.

The main advantage of epoxy flooring is the ease of maintenance. Concrete floors need appropriate protection and an epoxy floor is the best choice to offer protection against abrasion, chemical attack and thermal shock, which are commonly experienced in an industrial set up. With the advent of technology, further innovations are expected and it is only a matter of time before epoxy flooring solutions find wide application in the residential segment as well.

Epoxy is known as a very durable type of glue providing users with high levels of bonding properties. Epoxy is seen as something that is much more superior to most paste style glues. The components of epoxy are sold in two packages that require mixing prior to use. These components are resins and hardeners. Many industrial and commercial buildings use epoxy flooring in their building facilities because of the numerous cost saving and safety benefits it provides to users.

While concrete is seen as virtually indestructible, it is not impervious to certain types of damage, including cosmetic, such as scuffing, cracking and staining. This can ruin the overall attractiveness of the floor. Concrete is porous and can absorb dirt, salt, chemicals and oils, making it difficult to clean the concrete floors properly. By applying an epoxy coating on the concrete, the concrete is protected. Epoxy flooring has a high-gloss finish that can increase light reflectivity by 200%. It will seal the porous concrete surface and render it stain proof. Epoxy flooring is also very simple to clean because there is nothing for pollutants to hang onto.

Due to the chemical structure of epoxy, it is extremely durable as well as scratch resistant. Unlike using a latex based paint, individuals using a solid resin-based epoxy product do not need to repaint their floors every few years. In fact, one coat of solids-based epoxy flooring can last a lifetime. The main point is that epoxy flooring pain will bond with cement molecules in any floor to provide results that are long lasting. This molecular bond is a lot stronger than the adhesion provided by other paints, including enamel and latex based paints. This makes it especially good to use in areas where there is heavy foot traffic or heavy machinery.

Epoxy flooring is typically found in a number of locations, including basements, and garage floors, indoor patios, retail stores, restaurants, hospitals, manufacturing facilities, and laboratories, which all require strong, durable flooring. Some homeowners even want their kitchen floors to be coated with epoxy. Aside from the durability of epoxy flooring, it is able to withstand damage that is caused by different chemical solutions. This means not only will it not be damaged by chemical floor cleaners, but if a laboratory has epoxy flooring and some chemicals spill, it will not ruin the floor.

Epoxy coatings for floors are also very inexpensive compared to other types of floor finishes including carpeting, tile, wood and vinyl. Polyurea pains typically cost up to four times the amount of epoxy flooring and homeowners or business owners do not see any benefits from the increased cost. It is extremely economical and because it is durable, epoxy flooring is a lasting investment. Men and women will not need to do constant touch up jobs because of its long-lasting effects.

Finally, flooring coatings are very simple to clean and maintain. The impact from traffic, oil, salt and chemicals in garages, commercial and industrial facilities are difficult to remove and costly to repair if untreated. It is not only frustrating and time consuming, but also can be very expensive.

You should definitely consider an epoxy floor coating if you're thinking about changing your walking surfaces. Epoxy floors are seamless, and there's no place for bacteria and other contaminants to multiply. They're great for restaurants and other food processing businesses, and are also commonly used in industrial settings. Epoxy flooring is also perfect for home use, especially for kitchens.

If you want a long-lasting, sturdy garage floor, epoxy is the best option. This type of flooring is easy to install, and can be done by a professional or a motivated do-it-yourselfer just by following a few simple instructions. There are different types of epoxy, and your choice should be based on how much traffic passes on your flooring from day to day, how often you'll need to touch up, and of course, the cost of each option.

Water-based epoxy is the cheapest option. Homeowners generally find that it's easy to apply, and the least toxic, but also the least durable. It's great for use in the home, and incredibly user-friendly. It's not a very good selection for industrial purposes or for flooring that has trouble with dampness. As a homeowner, it's important that you understand that water-based paint often requires annual touch-ups.

Some people don't consider water-based paint to be a true epoxy, since it does not come in two parts. Unlike other types of epoxy, where the hardener is mixed with the resin before being applied, water-based paint is pre-mixed, and is therefore not very different from regular paint.
